Riley Leonard Will Be the Colts No. 2 Quarterback vs. Chargers, Despite Signing Brett Rypien

INDIANAPOLIS --- Rookie quarterback Riley Leonard will be Daniel Jones’ primary backup for this week’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Colts have signed veteran Brett Rypien to the practice squad, but Rypien was not able to fly to Indianapolis until Wednesday, leaving Rypien little time to learn the offense.

Leonard, a 6th-round pick out of Notre Dame, has been serving as the Colts’ scout-team quarterback in practice and the team’s emergency quarterback on Sundays.

“I love Riley,” Steichen said. “I think Riley came in with the right mindset from Day 1. The way he works, the way he prepares. It’s a development opportunity for Riley this week.”

It remains unclear if Leonard will be the back-up moving forward.

“We’ll see how everything goes through the next couple of weeks,” Steichen said.

Indianapolis needs a back-up quarterback for the next four weeks, at a minimum.

Backup quarterback Anthony Richardson suffered an orbital fracture in pre-game warm-ups on Sunday when an apparatus with a resistance band attached to it snapped, sending Richardson to the hospital for most of the game.

Richardson will be around the team, but he faces a significant recovery.

“He’s here today, he had a checkup this morning,” Steichen said. “But he was in the offensive meeting and stuff. Obviously, from a medical standpoint, he just really needs his rest, because he can’t really do anything physically.”

Rypien, 29, has played for 7 teams in 7 NFL seasons, making 3 of his 4 starts with Denver from 2020 to 2022. He made his last start for the Los Angeles Rams in 2023.

“A guy that’s been doing it for a long time,” Steichen said.

The Colts tried out 4 quarterbacks on Tuesday ...... Jeff Driskel, Jaren Hall, Kyle Trask, and Tanner Mordecai ...... but Rypien was the target after he was released by the Bengals following Cincinnati’s trade for Joe Flacco last week.

“He was just a guy we had on our radar,” Steichen said. “Heard a lot of great things about him. Obviously, he was there in Minnesota for a little bit with Daniel. Daniel’s got great things to say about him, about his preparation, about his work.”

Rypien will have a lot of catching up to do.

“I'm excited to get him in here, and get him learning the system,” Steichen said.

As soon as he gets off the plane.
