NDIANAPOLIS — The Colts are taking a flyer on a tall, lanky cornerback who has some experience in the NFL.
Indianapolis has signed former Chicago cornerback Kevin Toliver II, the team announced Wednesday.
Toliver II, a 6-2, 192-pounder, signed with the Bears as an undrafted free agent out of LSU in 2018 and impressed enough to both win a spot and make his first career start in September of his rookie season.
But Toliver II couldn’t make himself into a consistent piece for Chicago despite making two interceptions as a rookie, starting just two of the 27 games he played for the Bears over two seasons.
The Bears released Toliver II at the end of his third training camp in Chicago, and he’s bounced around the practice squads of Denver and Baltimore the past two seasons, playing in two games with the Broncos in 2021.
Toliver II’s length makes him an intriguing flyer for the Colts to take. Under general manager Chris Ballard, Indianapolis has always liked tall, lengthy cornerbacks, a preference that only grew when the Colts hired defensive coordinator Gus Bradley last season.
Indianapolis has not revealed publicly if Bradley and his staff will be back under new head coach Shane Steichen in 2023. Bradley remains under contract, and although Steichen was non-committal about the possibility in his opening press conference, there have been no defensive coordinator or coach candidates or hirings reported by the new Colts coach yet, even though Steichen has hired Jim Bob Cooter to be the offensive coordinator and reportedly added two more assistants.
