I strongly suspect this is just an effort to build a little leverage for the inevitable Darnold trade. From their perspective, I don't know why they'd keep a QB who is becoming much more expensive and hasn't performed up to expectations, particularly when they're going to be rebuilding anyway. Taking a QB at #2 seems to make far more sense.

Ironically enough, by losing the #1 overall pick, they've increased Darnold's trade value. If they had #1 overall, they'd have an even harder time convincing any potential trade partners that they were planning on keeping him.
I've been an advocate of trading for Darnold for some time now. I thought that ship had sailed once the Jets lost the Trevor Lawrence bowl. However, Darnold finished poorly and had the worst passer rating in the NFL. He threw more INTs than TDs. I still think there's hope for him, but I wouldn't give more than a 3rd or 4th round pick for him. If Justin Fields performs against Alabama anywhere near like he did against Clemson, the first two picks in the draft will be Lawrence and Fields and the Jets will pick the one that the Jags don't.

Yup Darnold is gone. Just how much someone wants to give up for him.

Justin Smith already showed me enough to be number 2. Plus the spoiled brat comments coming out about the BYU QB.

For those thinking about a Wentz trade, here's one of the practical obstacles:

Quote:
Trading Wentz before the third day of the league year would result in a dead cap charge of ~$34MM. Cutting Wentz would dead cap hit of nearly $60MM. Even if it’s spread out over two years, that’s a cap killer. Frank Reich — the former Eagles OC who could lose Philip Rivers to retirement — may look to reunite with his one-time protege.

I'll take Wentz, Pederson is a fucking hack who hasn't been worth a shit since Reich left. Look at what a POS he is based on last night's game. Pederson is a clueless bastard and he will soon be fired by the Eagles.

So they're going to keep him as a backup under current cap constraints? That seems like suicide as well. This may be the Eagles trying to create leverage for a potential trade, little else makes sense. Don't buy it, get Wentz for a 3.

I agree with this in principle however I think you’re being too kind in your choice of words.

Well, you're right that its sort of a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. The problem is that they backloaded his contract, so 2019/2020 were the cap-friendly years, and now they're heading into the really bad part of the contract. They're scheduled to take a cap hit of $30M plus each of the next four years:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/philadel...n-wentz-18950/

Any effort to move him off the team will carry severe, immediate cap consequences - the impact of which would be magnified if the cap is reduced as expected next year. If they keep him on the team, I suppose they could restructure some of the deal (assumed he would agree) to spread the pain over a longer period, but they're going to need to pay the piper eventually.

After looking at the deal, I think a 3 is probably too much for him. I'm thinking a 6-7 rounder is more appropriate.

Thirty million cap hit for the next four years is to much of a gamble for me. I am actually thinking that any draft choice would be overpaying. At this price unless Reich/Ballard are absolutely positive that the issue was Pederson I would prefer to stay away

Why even bother taking that risk for a guy who looked like complete shit on the field and whose teams have done better when he's not playing? It's not even remotely worth that financial risk or giving up picks for.

I wouldn't touch that Wentz contract. I would rather go through the draft. That's a lot of gamble for a few good years and several bad.
