While he has said that's what he wants to do, your first point isn't correct. He was with the Bears when they drafted Alshon Jeffrey in the 2nd round. He was also with the Bears when they drafted Devin Hester, though he wasn't originally picked to play WR.

Too early to say for sure what he'll do. I know what he's said. But the Funchess contract doesn't really fit with what he's said. So we'll see.

Ballard reads a lot about other leaders and executives across sports and outside of sports. It wouldn't surprise me if he came across this quote from Andy MacPhail: "There's no such thing as a bad one year contract."

There are obviously differences between MLB and the NFL, but I tend to believe that is true in most situations.

Except Funchess does fit. If he balls out on his one year deal ala Desir, and then leaves in FA, we will get a pretty respectable comp pick. And let’s face it, $10 mil is the market for a guy who should be seen as a legit #2 WR.
