Bill Belichick was the head coach of teams that made it to 9 Super Bowls ...... but in my rat's ass of an opinion, his most impressive piece of work was the 2008 season when the Patriots went 11-5 with Matt Cassel at quarterback. Tom Brady had missed that entire 2008 season with a knee injury, yet somehow Belichick's team went 11-5, anyway ...... and in addition to that, when Brady returned the very next season the Patriots went 10-6, and were blown out by the Ravens in the Wildcard round of the playoffs on their homefield in Foxborough.

The Matt Cassel-led 2008 Patriots team didn't make the playoffs that year even though they had a record of 11-5, because the AFC was stacked in 2008. They are only one of 2 teams ever not to make the playoffs with an 11-5 record (the 1985 Denver Broncos were the other 11-5 team to do so) ...... and in hindsight, I think that it's a shame that that 2008 team didn't make the playoffs because if they had and had done well (with Matt Cassel at quarterback), it would have put an undeniable, permanent stamp on the fact that those Patriots teams were loaded on both sides of the ball, and were led by one of the greatest coaches of all-time.


As I stated before, Bill Belichick led the Patriots to 9 Super Bowls in his tenure as coach ...... but I would argue that his best year as a head coach was when he led the Patriots to an 11-5 record with Matt Cassel at quarterback.

You're not alone in not liking him but feeling he should have been 1st Ballot. Here's what I think:

1. Coaches, like players, should have to wait 5 years before being eligible
2. Belichick made Tom Brady, and then Tom Brady made Belichick
3. I'm not a fan of the HOF format. To me, voters that skip over someone who is deserving so that they can help a borderline candidate get in is complete bullshit.

Perhaps it should be that the top 5 vote getters should get in regardless of their percentage.

What casual fans (Brady lovers) miss is what you said here. The Patriots teams were stacked teams. There were probably a dozen QBs who could have won the SB with those teams, but Brady gets the credit. Add in the BB was the master of moving on from a player at the right time, and the roster was able to churn in the best way possible.

Eh, fuck him. If Belicheat had wanted to be a 1st ballot HOFer then he shouldn't have so flagrantly cheated. Of course then maybe we wouldn't have won* as many championships*.

1. I use to agree with this sentiment. But, let's say a coach coaches until he's 74 and then dies before he can be inducted into the HOF. IMO, that would be heartbreaking for his family and unfair to him.

2. Chicken and egg, will be debated forever.

3. Agreed it's the dumbest format ever, and keeps deserving nominees out of the HOF.

Bear Bryant died one month after he coached his final game, in January of 1983.

Players' careers are relatively finite, but coaches (as you pointed out) are different.
