Manning and Harrison alone were already like 25% of the cap, prime Reggie needed to be signed that same off-season and they knew in the near future guys in their prime like Freeney, Mathis, Clark, Sanders, etc. would need contracts.
There was also an upward trend in RB-by-committee happening. For what it's worth: Rhodes + Addai rushed for more yards in 2006 than Edge + Rhodes did in 2005. And together their salaries were like half of what Edge ended up getting in ARZ.
