One of the big problems is that NFL teams just thrust players into full bore training camp often. Not every athlete is training hard every day in the offseason. Say your ideal playing weight is 225 and you check in at 236. OK, team isn't going to cut you, and you're going to lose it in camp, but that's 11 pounds you're not used to on your frame while you try to go full speed after not going full speed for a while. This is how plenty of ACL tears happen in camp.

If the NFL were smart (it is not), it would have a mandatory camp intro week before full speed practices are allowed to begin, which gets players warmed up for camp. I think some teams do this already, but it should be mandated.
