That would help the Pats no doubt, but they'd still be saddled with these contracts. History has not been kind to teams that spend like drunken sailors on free agents. And regardless of what the cap amounts are, every team would be under the same cap, so bad free agent contracts will always place you at a competitive disadvantage.
I am NOT saying that signing free agents is always bad, but I do agree that it needs to be done with care. When a team spends wildly like the Patriots have this offseason, it doesn't give you the impression that there's a clear vision there.
