But only for the next two years. He could still be in for a big payday long term if he does well the next few years
This seems to give him basically two years instead of the current one year to prove he deserves to be the starter.
I think the worst case scenario here is he ends up being OK, enough for the team to be good but not serious contenders, and then they may be forced to overpay for him to keep him rather than make a move for a new QB.
Basically I don't want to see Ballard end up making a Kirk Cousins type deal in a few years, but then I don't think he is that stupid.
We are better off with him being either really good and then you just pay him and know you have a starter or just really bad and then you can move on in two years.
That middle ground is where you get stuck.
