It all sounds good now. BUT, if he can play, how does the line look now?

Maybe being a backup will do him some good. He can heal mostly taking less snaps and see where he is next year. Slauson will probably have that RG spot nailed down and we got the other rookie OL who I really like and think will take the spot eventually.

Depth on the OL is so important, as we have seen as Colts fans.

Is slauson better than a healthy mewhort? I don’t think that he is

Hopefully we have a coaching staff competent enough to oversee a legitimate training camp competition now.

I'd like to be positive and upbeat about this, but the circumstances strongly suggest to me that Mewhort won't be healthy or back anywhere close to his old form. Simply put, the Colts wouldn't have been able to sign him so cheaply ($1.2M, minimal guarantees), and Mewhort wouldn't have been so outspokenly thankful, if there was any great likelihood of this.

Have we seen a long enough stretch of a healthy Mewhort to know this?

The consensus on this board is that Smith will beat them both out.

Not in awhile. He was pretty healthy to start his career if I remember right. Just saying if all things are equal, I could see mewhort winning a job. That said I don’t think it will be an honest competition

Maybe

But I don’t think we will see two rookie starting guards unless injuries factor in

Puck 06-25-2018 07:47 PM

I think Goode will end up the RT

Hmm. This post just reads like gibberish, but it might have been caused by autocorrect. It happens.

Sounds like a Dam & Pagano date.

I would LOVE for this to happen because that means that he has beaten out a pretty solid NFL veteran right OT in Austin Howard to do that.

One of the best results going forward for this team is that Good (or Haeg) seize the right OT slot and make it their own in 2018 as an above average right OT.

This means that the starting O-Line of 'Stanzo / Nelson / Kelly / Smith / Good (or Haeg) is set for 2019 after Ballard would sign Good (or Haeg) to a veteran contract at the end of the season with some of our $16.5m that we should spend by the end of the year.

If that happens, you are then only looking for quality depth to replace the 1 year contracts of Slauson, Mewhort and Howard in 2019. Signing quality depth is a whole lot easier (and cheaper) than signing a veteran starting right OT.

I want Ballard to fix the O-Line LONG TERM and not just for one season. We need to be drafting an O-Lineman in the top 4 rounds of the draft EVERY YEAR in order to protect Luck and fuel the running game. Every year.

Walk Worthy,

Also if we want to look at this realistically, fans tend to pencil in rookies as quality starters every year but that very rarely is the case. I think it will be a difficult task for smith to beat out slauson and mewhort.

Agreed, I do hope he is going to be a badass and earns the spot mid-season.
