Thoughts on the Steeler game
My first thought is that there’s no need to turn on the gas and stick your head in the oven. The four horsemen have not come for this season, all is not lost, the sky has not crashed down upon us.
The knee jerk reaction, especially among those of us whose agenda is to trash the team, the players, coaches, owners, Blue, and the guy who sells hotdogs in concource A, is towards wailing and teeth gnashing. The Colts could have won by two Touchdowns, and they would have called for Steichen’s head because of a decision to settle for a FG at the end of the 1st half. The Colts played their first game in 1950, 77 seasons ago; and, in all that time, they’ve won exactly one game in Pittsburgh. Unitas couldn’t win there, Bert Jones couldn’t, Jeff George couldn’t, and neither could Jim Harbaugh or Andrew Luck. The greatest Quarterback of all time managed to scrape out one W. I don’t know what it is. Maybe, it’s voodoo. Maybe, once upon a time, someone from Pittsburgh tried to bring a goat to a game at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, was turned away, and brought a curse down upon our heads. Maybe, before the next game, Carlie should abandon the headset and burn sage in the visitors locker room. Maybe she should get a Shaman to sacrifice a chicken at midfield. I don’t like to think that the schedule makers conspired against us, but they did give Pittsburgh 10 days to prepare for the game. By way of comparison, I take note of the fact that the Jaguars get a bye week following their European sojourn, and that their bye comes just before a game vs the Colts. As far as the game, itself, is concerned, I’ll take a moment to point out to the burn it down crowd that, save for two chunk plays, the Colts were the best team on the field. More first downs, more yards gained, longer time of possession. DK Metcalf, who spent a week taunting Sauce Gardner, managed 12 yards on 3 catches. Apart from the 80 yarder, Warren had 5 catches on which he managed 7 yards. On the ground, he had the 50 yarder, but aside from that, he marshaled just 3.4 yards per carry. Rodgers managed to avoid an onslaught of sacks, but that was due to the fact that he was getting rid of the ball so quickly. In the passing game, his average depth of target was a scant 4 yards. On D, Sauce Gardner allowed 1 reception on 2 targets for a total of 9 yards. Ward allowed 1 reception. I wasn’t happy about the way the red zone Offense fizzled, but they were without their top red zone target in Alec Pierce; Dulin and Slayton were out as well, and Keenan Allen was banged up. The Steelers did a great job of scheming to stop Taylor, but they were helped by Pierce’s absence. The OL held up pretty well, Warren had a good day, CK Allen finally showed up on the stat sheet. This week, it’s on to the Titans. If they win, they’re back in the thick of the playoff hunt. |
You actually think this is about one bad game?

So you go to a local dive bar, get a corner booth away from the crowd, and just start riffing on the insane shit happening at the job---- there has to be so much of that shit happening inside that org right now. So many people have go away to get this shit back on track. |

I often wonder, and am too lazy and busy to look this up, but what was the sentiment of this board in 2018, when we started out 1-5?
That was a very young team across the board, so it couldn't have been good. |

I cannot speak for the board but in 2018 I was still in on Ballard. Felt he was an excellent drafter at the time. It felt like we had hit rock bottom but were improving in our play without it being seen in our record. I remember thinking (and i believe posting) that our offensive line was looking better and better, which was huge to me. It still is the best part of our team, Ballard knows how to build an offensive line for sure. In 2018 it felt to me like we sucked but were on the right path so i actually enjoyed watching.

I checked on the threads from back then. http://www.coltfreaks.com/forum/foru...=desc&page=144 http://www.coltfreaks.com/forum/foru...=desc&page=143 I only found 2 threads that severely criticized the team ...... one was in regard to the Colts' wide receiving core. http://www.coltfreaks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=55960 The other was in regard to the Colts using "too many screen passes" ...... those 2018 Colts were largely successful on offense BECAUSE OF those screen passes, so the OP in that thread was barking up a tree that was good, rather than bad. http://www.coltfreaks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=55884 This is Omaha's "quick" thoughts on the Bills game ...... that was when the Colts broke their losing streak, and improved to 2-5 overall. http://www.coltfreaks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56417 Omaha's recap was largely positive in spite of the Colts' sub-par 2-5 record, and in spite of the fact that Josh Allen had a terrible rookie season (10 TD's, 12 INT's and 52.8% for Pass Completions), and the Bills were a bad team. Dam started a thread pointing out the fact that Darius Leonard was named Defensive Rookie of the Month for September, in spite of the team having a 1-3 record for said month. http://www.coltfreaks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=54563 ************************************** On the whole, the ColtFreaks board appears to have been rather supportive of the team and non-panicked, in spite of their awful 1-5 record to start that 2018 season. o |
I mean, that team had Andrew Luck. The franchise had a future at that point, or at least it seemed like they did. No one could have predicted Luck would retire after that year.
A team with a bona fide franchise quarterback struggling is quite a bit different from what we have this year. This year we’re just sad. We’re not even interesting. The best we can hope for with this roster is squeaking into the playoffs and then an early exit. And that’s not even going to happen. That team with Luck had a future. This one doesn’t. |
