Quick Thoughts - Week 3

I'll post a full list when I get home, but let's start the thread...

-Most holy shit game since Chiefs last year? Can't believe what I just watched. Awesome and fuuuun.

-Jonathan Taylor, you and your shit head agent fucked up.

-Give Matt Gay all of JTs money. Unbelievable.

More later.

ChoppedWood 09-24-2023 04:53 PM

Can't say enough about the never say die attitude that this team has vs mostly the same dudes the last couple years.

We got some breaks for sure but we also made some gutty ass plays out there today. Attitude can get you a lot of wins when the lines that divide the talent is as thin as it is in the NFL.

CletusPyle 09-24-2023 04:56 PM

Zach Moss was clutch today, and I just heard him being interviewed on the Colts network, so well spoken and a great teammate! He said the defense is elite have some real dogs, very tough group! I know we are highh after a win, but I think this team can win the division!

Hoopsdoc 09-24-2023 04:57 PM

I think we have a really good coach. The 4th down run call in overtime notwithstanding.

JT can go f**k himself. He can get on the train or get left behind.

Also, pay Michael Pittman. That dude is a f*****g warrior.

nate505 09-24-2023 04:58 PM

I'm hoping this JT stuff will resolve itself when he comes back. Maybe everyone can just hit the reset button.

Though I have little faith a bunch of men with massive egos can do that.

Hoopsdoc 09-24-2023 04:58 PM

Oh, and all those people bitching about Ballard signing the gay kicker can get bent. That dude is worth every penny.

Absolutely. Especially since Jacksonville, and Sister Goldenhair, seem(s) to have regressed.

albany ed 09-24-2023 05:01 PM

Before the season started, I thought Minshew should be the opening day QB. When they announced it would be Richardson I was cool with that, because either way they weren't a playoff team so Richardson may as well be the starter. I think Richardson is special, but some seasoning is needed. If from the beginning you thought you could be a playoff team, Minshew would have given you the best shot, with Richardson replacing him by week six. I like Minshew, he's the best veteran QB we've had since Luck quit. He's not a star, but he's not going to be the reason you lose. I cheered more today than the total combined times I cheered the entire last season. If they came up short today and lost in OT, I still would have said this was a fun game to watch. Winning it was just the icing on a beautiful cake.

Dam8610 09-24-2023 05:07 PM

Great things that happened today:

1) Your first place Indianapolis Colts went on the road and gutted out a hard fought win with their backup QB starting.

2) Trevor LawrBUST showed up and showed out against one of the worst teams in the league.

Bad things that happened today:

1) As I predicted, C.J. Stroud is a really good QB. Longest interceptionless streak to start a career.

YDFL Commish 09-24-2023 05:10 PM

Not self promoting are you?

No, I'd rather have been wrong about Stroud. Glad Lawrence is regressing, though.

A Colts fan? Yes, that is who I want to be. When the other teams in the AFC South look bad, I enjoy that. When it looks like they found good players, I don't enjoy that. Sorry you're more invested in Trevor Lawrence's success than the Colts' success. Seems like quite a few here are.

Greetings from Baltimore where I was at the game.

Holy shit, that’s all I’ve got.

I was at the Colts/broncos game in Denver last year, but this one feels so much more satisfying.

This is the most satisfying win for me since the Kansas City game last year. Great great win.

rm1369 09-24-2023 06:33 PM

Minshew is a great backup QB. Tough, steady, understands and accepts his role. It would be damn near impossible not to like the guy.

As great as Minshew was the game highlighted the elements you miss with not having AR back there.

It was good to see Bradley break tendencies on some key downs and bring extra pressure. That’s good coaching and preferably to “we do what we do”. With the lack of experience in the secondary disruptive pressure is even more important.

Brents looks like he had a good first game. He looked quick in space and physical. Secondary needs it.

I’m happy with Moss as RB1. Obviously would prefer to pair him with JT, but Moss has shown why the team has taken the “prove it” stance they have. Tough, solid player. You can win with what he brings.

Ebukam was a good signing.

Gay was a great signing.

A couple decisions for Steichen that would have had guys calling for Reich’s head. Also obvious the team plays hard for him and he’ll coach to win. Very happy with the overall coaching so far.

What section were you in? There were a LOT of colts fans there. half our entire section were colts fans.

Oldcolt 09-24-2023 07:03 PM

This, to me anyway, this win is on what Steichen has brought to this team. Good coaches know how to win and seem to instill that in their team. We would have never won a game like this in the past few years.

On another note did Ballard finally hit on a cornerback? Brents looked pretty damn comfortable hitting folks today.

I want JT back but Moss shows exactly why you don’t give long term contracts to running backs.

The offensive line continues to surprise me, i had lost faith but am loving watching myself be completely wrong.

Shaq seems to be moving better each game. He has been through a hell of a lot and to keep making progress is a nice testament to the man.

For the first time in I can’t remember we are actually getting pressure on the QB. That is a prerequisite to being a real competitive team. Nice.

This season will prove that Ballard has built a team that could compete with reliable quarterback play.

1. Any day the Colts win a game makes for a great day.
2. To see the Jags and Taints lose makes it even sweeter.
3. Watching Jimmy Johnson say our upset was not as remarkable as the Cards beating his former team is even more enjoyable.
4. First place feels good.

Oldcolt 09-24-2023 07:53 PM

Come on Dam, accusing people of being invested in the success of Lawrence is pure bullshit. There is no correlation between saying someone is good at what they do and having an emotional investment in his success.

And if Moss was available week 1, we'd be 3-0.

ChaosTheory 09-24-2023 08:03 PM

Ok, rest of my thoughts...

-I want to quickly point out how after BAL marched down the field for their first TD drive, they fumbled on four straight possessions. More importantly to me...
Jackson and Co. were laughing and joking on the sidelines until after the 3rd fumble. Then right before half, the cute backwards hat comes off and they decide to take the dogfight seriously.

Don't be like that, Richardson.

OFFENSE/ST:

-Zack Moss and the O-Line really grinded out an effective run game today. With your backup QB and another short-ranged pass gameplan, that was tough to do. 4ypc on 35 carries. Great TD catch by Moss, too.

-Pass pro wasn't great, but I have a feeling the film won't look as bad for the O-Line. Minshew was completely blind to Hamilton's blitzes, it wasn't Smith's job to take him. And some of the pressure felt like it was coverage-induced.

-Pittman was again better (and more clutch) than his numbers. That OT catch was one of the plays of the game in a field-position game. Pierce and Downs also solid contributions in a field-position game.

-Minshew is limited, but he's a good backup and teammate. Come on, AR!

-Matt Gay is showing to be a massive luxury. Shortening your field to the point where you only need to get inside the 38-yard line to get consistent points is huge.

-McKenzie did well on his punt returns... but catch the fucking ball at the 14 next time, goddamn it.

DEFENSE:

-What else to say about our front-7? Sacks, pressures, TFLs, and just keeping Jackson uncomfortable. Didn't start this year, they just need the offense not to have catastrophic mistakes.

-Julian Blackmon seemed like he was all over the place.

-Bradley schemed to keep Jackson as limited in the passing game as Minshew was... only Jackson is a $260m QB, not a backup.

-Baker healthy scratch felt along the lines of Deon Jackson getting cut. You don't perform, you're out with Steichen.

-Brents' physicality was a welcome sight. That's a big CB. Hopefully he helps get that secondary on par with the front-7 and this D will be scary.

YDFL Commish 09-24-2023 08:09 PM

I agree with that, only if Steichen would've not gone for it on 4th down and let Matt Gay get the points.

We now have a coach that learns from his mistakes. Where before we had one that repeated them over and over again.

I am so glad that we have gotten rid of the stench of Frank Reich that it makes me giddy.

Examples, Deion Jackson rushes for 14 yards on 13 carries and loses 2 fumbles. He's demoted 1 week and cut the next. Darrell Baker stinks it up for 2 straight games and Brents is the starter.

How long did Reich ride the train wreck of Matt Prior at both LT and RG before Jeff Saturday had to come in and say this ain't working?

The players see it when guys aren't doing their jobs and coaches let it slide and it affects the whole team negatively.

I watched a lot of their game last Monday. Different names, same game. I sort of laughed to myself when mid 1st half they called a TO. Young came to the sideline stood with Reich and Reich legitimately kept his head down in that damn sheet- the entire TO. Never once raised his head and looked at his rookie QB. The plays and the lack of execution, in particular the holding of the ball (the route trees must just be insanely complicated), looked identical. He has lost himself in the belief that his X's & O's are how you win, it's not, it's just not. It starts with the talent always, always with the talent, and that talent has to be used in ways that leverage their talents.

It is refreshing to see guys that just aren't talented enough to be on your roster, not just not starting, not even on your roster.

What a fuckin game…

Brents saved the game with that early forced fumble

Zaire brings the hammer every week

Hats off to the Oline, besides Hamilton and 1 Clowney rush they shut the Ravens out

Moss with a monster day

Pittman what a fuckin catch

That was playoff type intensity

Hats off to Steichen and Bradley as well

And Gay out performing Tucker is crazy

Hoopsdoc 09-24-2023 11:40 PM

I like Steichens energy. He really stalks that sideline.

I thought French had a good game under difficult circumstances.

Raimann is very steady at left tackle. It reminds me of having Castonzo out there. You don’t even think about it.

Another long return allowed on special teams. This one almost cost us the game. That’s gonna bite us in the ass at some point.

Brylok 09-25-2023 12:18 AM

I fell asleep on my couch in the first quarter. Didn't even see the game. I'm glad we won. Fuck all you youngsters who don't think it's coming for you. And good luck, you'll need it. Getting old is weird. I hope it doesn't last much longer.

It probably will...smh

I am so pleased that they came away with this. I think they still have plenty of opportunity to improve offensively, but this is a game they have not won for years. It's good to see them actually take the W against another team that is trying their hardest to blow it. I do think Baltimore lost this more than Indy won it, but in my eyes this is the growth from the team that we have hoped to see. Especially against those fucking rat birds and their whiny ass fans.

- Franklin has taken over the LB group and I see/hear more from #45 than #53.

- Pittman's catch today was enormous. I hope he can keep this shit up, and I hope Pierce can start to find some consistency. Both of them had similar jump-ball opportunities and Pitt came down with a harder one IMO.

- Gotta love to see Brents come out and make an impact today.

- Fellas, these guys can rush the passer. We've been waiting years for that. Paye is 3 for 3.

- I'm so happy Blankenship is no longer on this team. This reminded me of the divisional game during the championship run. Resilience is the right word, coach.

- I was not happy with a rookie HC hire but this guy is looking okay right now. Again, his attitude is different than the other two guys. Time will tell.

- #52 is a busy dude. That kid gets a lot of work. That's looking like a good pickup right now.

- Kenny Moore is making a play every week.

- Moss is really putting the team in an advantageous position here. I don't know if this means Taylor's position is worse, because ultimately if 31 other teams are open to paying him - he's worth whatever they're willing to pay. But the team is in a good position here.

Steichen doesn't owe Taylor shit, Moss is making an argument he can be the guy, and in some sense Taylor has to actually prove he deserves to be on the field. The pressure is on Taylor, not us. Good problem for us.

- First in the AFC south. Awesome way to start the year. I want to stay grounded and not have inappropriate expectations, so I will sit back and enjoy the ride.

It already did in the Jax game--it was the turning point.

ukcolt 09-25-2023 09:40 AM

I thought the O'line played well, especially with French making his first start and then Sills having 18 snaps next to him. Didn't notice any drop off at all. Which is good, the play with the starters was already fairly good beforehand, so not as if slotting one poor performance for another.

Most of the pressure was coming from the blitzing of Hamilton, who looks like a hell of a player in that system, he was a menace to the Colts yesterday.
