One storyline to watch over the next three days: The value of 2022 Draft picks is sky high. “Like gold,” as one executive described. There should be more talent, cleaner evaluations, more tape. We could see an all-time low of future picks dealt.

This will be interesting, but my guess is that it's an over-rated storyline. There is enough tape to make decent evaluations for most of the draftable players this year. Maybe it's not recent tape, and not as much as in the past, but I'll wager that the league's stronger scouting departments will be fine. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ballard get one or two picks this year for weaker picks next year, because he trusts his group to get it right, and other GMs may be panicky.

Oh boy, draft night! Which for the Colts means the excitement of waiting for the to see what the Colts trade down for.

yeah, I really liked ballard's last press conference where he said "talk to you friday"

Chromeburn 04-29-2021 01:58 PM

The only benefit of having that 1st rounder is the 5th year extension which would be nice to have on a LT or pass rusher.

Saints are also rumored trying to trade into the top 10

Also here is the breakdown of who the experts predicted us to draft. Stole from reddit, not sure where he stole it from, maybe indystar

Jaelen Phillips, EDGE (Miami) - 13 selections: Glynn Morgan (NBC Sports), Charlie Campbell (Walter Football), Dan Kadar (Akron Beacon Journal), Jason McIntyre (Fox Sports), Seth Trachtman (Yardbarker), Sam Farmer (Los Angeles Times), Chris Simms (NBC Sports), Nate Bouda (NFL Trade Rumors), Derrik Klassen (Football Outsiders), Thor Nystrom (NBC Sports EDGE), Josh Edwards (CBS Sports), Bucky Brooks (NFL.com), Mel Kiper Jr (ESPN)

Samuel Cosmi, OT (Texas) - 6 selections: Peter King (NBC Sports), Dean Kindig (DraftTek), Lance Cartelli (Lines.com), Josh Norris (Underdog Fantasy), Michael Fabiano (Sports Illustrated), Joe DeTullion (The Game Haus)

Kwity Paye, EDGE (Michigan) - 5 selections: Omar Kelly (Miami Sun Sentinal), Zach Hicks (SB Nation), C.J. Doon (Baltimore Sun), Pete Prisco (CBS Sports), Mike Wells (ESPN)

Christian Darrisaw, OT (Virginia Tech) - 4 selections: Vinnie Iyer (Sporting News), Maurice Jones-Drew (NFL.com), Luke Easterling (Draftwire), Jon Ledyard (Pewter Report)

Alex Leatherwood, OT (Alabama) - 2 selections: Stephen Holder (The Athletic), Staff (Alpha Football)

I'd actually like to see a trade down or 2. Maybe something like:

Saints get: 21

Colts get: 28, 98, 105

Then:

Jets get: 28

Colts get: 34, 66

Dropping down 13 picks in this scenario would give the Colts 34, 54, 66, 98, and 105, or likely 2 of the top 50, 3 of the top 75, and 5 of the top 100 players in this draft. I think if you don't get Jenkins or Phillips, this is probably the best play.

RAS. Scores. if interested

Dam8610 04-29-2021 03:01 PM

Also I said I'd do an OT ranking. No discussion, but here it is:

01) Rashawn Slater
02) Teven Jenkins
03) Christian Darrisaw
04) Liam Eichenberg
05) Samuel Cosmi
06) Penei Sewell
07) Dillon Radunz
08) Jalen Mayfield
09) Walker Little
10) Brady Christensen
11) Alex Leatherwood
12) Stone Forsythe
13) Spencer Brown
14) James Hudson

This is just the players I watched personally, and I'll happily give a justification for each ranking if asked. Answering one ahead of time, I know I previously ranked Sewell much lower, the increase in rank says nothing about his tape and everything about his age, build, and potential. To be clear, based on the Colts needing a Day 1 starter, I would not draft Sewell for them were he available, and if Cincinnati drafts him at 5, they won't be doing Joe Burrow any favors in the first year. Perhaps down the line, but I don't think Sewell is a game 1 starter based on his film. I took Vera-Tucker out because IMO he's a guard. His kickstep is too labored and forced to stick at LT, and he can't handle speed.

Eichenberg over Cosmi?

From your list I'd go this is the order This is how I think they come off the board

1. Penei Sewell
2. Rashawn Slater
3. Christian Darrisaw
4 Walker Little
5. Dillon Radunz
6. Tevin Jenkins
7. Liam Eichenberg
8. Spencer Brown
9. Samuel Cosmi

smitty46953 04-29-2021 03:27 PM

I watch more Notre Dame games than others, I really like Eichenberg.

Walker Little has too many question marks to go that high, I don't care how prototypical his build is. Also Jenkins going that low would likely mean Round 2 and I don't see that happening, nor Radunz coming off the board before him. Your list does show how potential pushes players up draft boards, though.

I think Jenkin is taken by Raiders as a guard

Little is very intriguing. Probably the most talented

Cosmi doesn't have as much ceiling as the others although he is pretty decent now.

I think the value of the OT's is in the 2nd round. Most are 1st round reaches.

JMO. I'm sure I could be wrong

Jenkins as a guard would be such a waste. The athleticism and technical skill is much better suited outside.

Well shit. We agree.

Puck 04-29-2021 04:46 PM

My quick rankings by position of need.

CB. This is going to be a much higher priority than most people think.

1. Patrick Surtain
2. Jaycee Horn. My favorite player
3. Greg Newsome
4. Caleb Farley

OT. Same as I posted above

1. Penei Sewell
2. Rashawn Slater
3. Christian Darrisaw
4 Walker Little
5. Dillon Radunz
6. Tevin Jenkins
7. Liam Eichenberg
8. Spencer Brown
9. Samuel Cosmi

WR.

1. DeVonta Smith
2. Ja'Marr Chase
3. Jaylen Waddle
4. Rashod Bateman
5. Rondale Moore
6. Kadarius Toney
7. Terrace Marshall Jr.

Edge Very weak class at the top. Probably 4th rounder here

1. Kwity Paye
2. Jaelan Phillips
3. Joe Tryon. OLB but could play DE
4. Gregory Rousseau
5. Azeez Ojulari
6. Carlos Basham Jr.
7. Micah Parsons
8. Jayson Oweh

TE. Only really 3 that I've seen. This is a very big need IMO unless they trade for Ertz

1. Kyle Pitts. I think he may be the best player in the draft behind Lawerence
2. Pat Freiermuth
3. Tommy Tremble

LB Only one I care about is Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and I would absolutely love the Colts to take him at 21 but he wont be there

I would not at all be surprised by a safety early.

As always JMO

If Indy could turn the 21st pick into five out of the top 100 by trading back only 13 picks total? Total Ballard move too.

If Colts trade back and get any of those nine (plus at least a pick in the third, if not more), then I'll be a happy fan.

Racehorse 04-29-2021 06:24 PM

I know Rondale Moore is a talent, but I am not sure I want him in the 'shoe. His decision to opt out and his injury history are two huge red flags for me.

Chromeburn 04-29-2021 07:07 PM

I think we trade back to get a pick in the third or a 2022 pick, and I think we take Raddunz at LT. Then a CB like Asante Samuel Jr, then a pass rusher like Elerson SMith or Payton Turner..

Puck 04-29-2021 07:29 PM

Not sure how far you think this trade back will go but Raddunz will probably be there are 54. If he's the BPA then yea take him.

The only way I see Ballard setting a priority for a position is if there is a run on LT's in the draft. Otherwise he'll probably get one at 54 who will be BPA

I too want him to trade back and get a couple more picks. But he still needs to take BPA that is not a position of NON need like QB RB OG OC All other positions need upgraded.

He already said he is not going to force a pick for a position of need.

I Think even in the middle of the 2nd the value will be WR and CB.

I've had a long day today so I hope he trades back and does it early

I think the value of senior Bowl players has gone up bc of covid. I expect Radunz to go late 1st to mid second. He may say that. But if he doesn’t draft a LT high then he better get Erik Fisher on the phone. Also in a risky year taking an offensive lineman is a safe move with a low bust rate. If Vera Tucker is there I think we take him, the gap between tackle and guard has shrunk a lot over the years.

WR is a super risky position. 40% of 1st round receivers have not had a 1000 yard season.

Chromeburn 04-29-2021 07:51 PM

BTW Ballard is on Pat Mcafree's show now

I hate all of the wait for the first pick. They know what they are going to do, so make the pick already.

Edit: I don't even see the clock for the Jags.

Brylok 04-29-2021 08:07 PM

I fully expect the Colts to trade back for more picks. I'll check in from time to time. Have fun y'all!

Racehorse 04-29-2021 08:07 PM

Is Smitty going to call all of the picks early again this year?

Is there anything the NFL can't over-produce and stuff full of commercials? The answer is obviously "no".
