What many of you have predicted has come true, Castonzo announced his retirement today:

Was hoping for one more year. When is the draft?

April 29 – May 1, 2021

Disappointing as I (like all of us) was hoping for another year. Good luck to AC in his NFL retirement and his next career choice. 10 seasons of nothing but great play from a class act! He did the organization right too by retiring at the beginning of the offseason.

We are going to miss him as not only a great athlete but a great leader as well. This certainly clarifies our draft to some degree.

If we can find the cape space Alejandro Villanueva would be a good investment.

I suspected. If we went far in the playoffs he might have come back.

As expected. I am glad he made the decision quickly so ballard has plenty of time to plan his strategy.

The only positive of this is that it frees up $16 million of cap space, which I believe gives the Colts the most cap space in the NFL. Of course that creates a much more urgent need as well, and of course Castanzo wil be missed.

Positive spin, with an ultra-small sample size (one game) ......

In a playoff game with everything (obviously) on the line, the offensive line did an outstanding job of protecting a quarterback with very limited mobility without Castonzo ...... not only was Philip Rivers not sacked a single time, the opposing team literally only touched him one time the entire game.

If they are capable of that kind of game in the post-season without Castonzo, they certainly still have the ability to continue to play well as a whole ...... that said, we all know that Castonzo was great, and he will unquestionably be leaving a hole that needs to be (at least) adequately filled.

If they can get a quality LT in the first round of the draft, they get his replacement for very cheap, at least for the next 4 years. That leaves them with a boat load of loot to spend on some other needs that can be filled in free agency.

I still remember back when the draft was going on and we were discussing the left tackle position. It was between Carimi and Castonzo, this board was kinda mixed on who they preferred. Worked out just fine with Castonzo, as Carimi injured his knee in his rookie season and just didn't work out.

Criminally underrated his entire career. Very good player for a long time.

Damn, that is a loss. Hurts to lose such a solid player at a key position, but as others have stated I really appreciate him letting the team know so early in the process. Costanzo never got the recognition he deserved outside of Colt's circles.

For years, he wasn’t getting much praise from fans, either. I recall quite a few posters using him as a whipping boy.

They can do that if they have to, but it will hurt the running game.

It will be cheaper to move him and sign a solid LG in free agency. Also allow the team to draft a pass rusher or a qb

And it will make Q that much more expensive to resign.

He was already going to be around $20 million per year. It actually won't be much of a difference for him.

Two words "Peter Principle"

Like I said, they can do it, but it will most definitely hurt the running game. Big Q is one of the best pulling guards in football. So yeah, they can do it if they have to, but if they can find a left tackle, then it's better off to really play to his strengths.

I don't want to see Nelson at tackle for purely selfish reasons. Nobody knows for sure how good he would be out at tackle. What I know for sure is I will miss watching him pancake and flatten interior linemen, linebackers and db's; especially when he is pulling. It won't happen as often out at tackle.

People said the same thing about Peyton Manning.
