Part of me feels like the Colts have, or think they have, some sort of inside track on Stafford or someone else.

Otherwise, if the reports are true, why slam the door on Rivers? They originally told him to take a month and decide, if I’m not mistaken. Why tell him they’re moving on 3 days later if they don’t have something else in hand? Unless they decided he’s just completely done, which is possible.

Doesn’t make sense.

Dodds wasn’t interviewing. He went on a deep state stealth mission to set up a trade. Its a conspiracy, the interview was a cover. Make the colts great again!

what am I missing here?
I thought Rivers just retired - I hadn't heard that before retiring the Colts told him anything about moving on...?

There are rumors circled by local media that the Colts decided to move on. Told him. Asked him how he wanted to handle it. So he announced he was retiring.

Could be true, might not be. Results are the same.

Everything points to it being true, from the way Rivers talked after the Bills game. He expected to be back.

Hoopsdoc 01-28-2021 02:58 PM

Apparently, Schefter is saying that the Colts haven’t even contacted Detroit about Stafford.

There’s something fishy going on....

Ballard “wheelin and dealing “ in silence

Could Ballard be pulling a head fake and deliver us a different QB? Certainly not out of the realm of possibility. Even likely, perhaps. Last offseason, it wasn't a secret we were interested in Rivers:

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/...colts-and-more

https://www.profootballrumors.com/20...-philip-rivers

Of course, we haven't even reached the offseason yet this year, and Rivers was a free agent and not a trade target, so maybe its premature to say this situation is exactly comparable.

Results are the same, but there's a world of difference in what it means.

I can’t see it unless hearing Irsay stand there and say the doors still open In front of the world caused a change of heart

They were trying to get Jimmy G last yr, maybe they are once again

I’m thinking Sam Darnold.

HoosierinFL 01-28-2021 08:47 PM

Part of me has assumed that we won't be going for a big free agent QB.
Rivers was OK because it was a 1 year deal. Its seems unlikely Ballard wants to lock in to a free agent on a long term contract. Ballard also likely doesn't want to ship out another 1st round draft pick after doing it for Buckner.
Also Irsay said in his interview that its better to draft your guy.

I think its Eason Season.

Ballard made it clear that the Colts aren't even certain he's ready to compete for the backup job. If he opens 2021 training camp #1 on the Colts QB depth chart, something has gone horribly wrong.

rcubed 01-28-2021 09:21 PM

I feel like its stafford or a trade up and draft.

I think it’s Stafford. I have no idea what their plan B is. I don’t think they do either. Nick Foles? Draft might be plan C.

Usually the obvious happens with this team. Don’t see a lot of head fakes.

I will be seriously pissed if it’s Nick Foles.

Brylok 01-29-2021 09:19 AM

I wonder how many months this will go on? Fills radio time I guess.

I've speculated elsewhere that this might just be coach-speak designed to both encourage Eason to keep working hard and also to not tip our hand about draft or free agency plans.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Plan B was Derek Carr.

Oldcolt 01-29-2021 10:56 AM

My guess is we don't land Stafford. There are a lot of teams looking to get him. The cost will be driven up. He is good, not great. If he were great he would have won more. Great qbs can elevate mediocre or bad teams. He doesn't seem capable of this. I don't think Ballard will overpay for him, at least I hope he wont. I have no idea what they are thinking or where they will go to fill the qb position, but I don't think they are blowing smoke about Eason needing more time.

rcubed 01-29-2021 11:19 AM

Albert breer on DP show this morning thinks stafford will be traded quickly to get a head of all the other QBs trades/signings

Perhaps "head fake" is the wrong term, since I agree the Colts don't usually engage in misdirection, but it's more like they don't talk and let speculation run rampant, then do what they want regardless of what the media expects. I just didn't see the same pattern back before we signed Rivers. There, there were reports of their interest in him.

This makes me think that Stafford may not be where the Colts want to go.

Yes, but Rivers was a free agent and letting everyone know that they were interested wasnt going to cost them anything.

Stafford is under contract and they wouldn’t want the Lions to find out that they REALLY want him or the price will just keep going up.

That could explain the difference.

Oldcolt 01-29-2021 02:29 PM

I want to give some props to the Colt front office. Seems like a very professional group. You know that this quarterback situation is their top priority and yet nothing has leaked from them. There really are no tea leaves to read yet.

If that was the case they would be looking at a vet QB to come in and help mentor him.

This I agree with. The fact that we know literally nothing about what their plans are speaks volumes.

That is, assuming they have some sort of plan.

There are reports of their interest in Stafford out now. A lot of teams seem interested. I don’t think they talk. But GB was pretty sure we would take Love at our pick and ive heard other reporters say we were interested in WR Tee Higgins. But it’s all speculative. I don’t know for sure how good they are at not tipping their hand.

I was thinking Darnold might be plan B. Not as good as Stafford. But he’s 23 with three seasons under his belt. Depends what the jets do at 2.

Rumor of 49ers offer for Stafford is

2021: 2nd and 3rd
2022: 2nd and 3rd

Per Vincent Frank

Don't know who this guy is, but if that is true a points per pick chart has SF #2 at 460 and #3 at 210 this year. Colts #1 this year is worth 800 points. It all depends on what else the Colts need to add. Probably a #2 (#2 this year is worth 370), maybe get away with a #3 (our 3 this year is worth 165). If SF finished with the #28 pick next year their #2 and #3 pick would be with 300 and 132 points respectively. Is Stafford worth a #1 and a #2?
