Default Colts sign OG/OT Fahn Cooper

Selected in the 5th round of the 2016 NFL draft by the 49ers. Cut in their final cut down to 53 and signed to their practice squad for the season. Choose not to sign a 2017 "futures" contract with San Fran.

His 2016 NFL.com Draft Profile:

Overview

Cooper fell below the radar as a high school recruit from Illinois, so he took a scholarship at Bowling Green. He started at left tackle as a redshirt freshman, but wanted to play for a major program so he transferred to the College of DuPage to catch the eyes of recruiters, rather than sitting out a year as a transfer. Ole Miss gladly welcomed him as a starter in 2014 (11 at right tackle, two at left tackle) and he continued to excel with the Rebels as a senior, starting for the suspended Laremy Tunsil the first seven games of the year before moving back to the right side.

Combine Results:
40 yard dash: 5.17 seconds
Bench press: 19 reps of 225 pounds
Broad jump: 8 feet, 6 inches
3 cone drill: 7.85 seconds
20 yard shuttle: 4.89 seconds

Pro Day Results:
Broad jump: 9 feet, 8 inches
Bench press: 24 reps of 225 pounds

Analysis

Strengths: Shows toughness in his approach and won’t back down from a physical challenge. Has the length to land an early punch on pass rushers and the big paws to snatch and ride a second level linebacker if he gets into them squarely. Good thickness in his lower half. Head coach Hugh Freeze praises him for leadership on and off the field. Started every game over his two years at Ole Miss and has played both tackle spots.

Weaknesses: More of an "in the way" player in space than functional blocker. Base may be too wide in pass sets causing some of his balance issues. A little labored in his pass sets and possesses below average athletic traits. Sluggish in his change of direction. Weight drifts a little behind his feet allowing pass rushers to get strong initial push on him on some reps. Unable to be effective space player.

Draft Projection:Rounds 6 or 7

Bottom Line: Cooper is one of the tough guys up front for the Rebels, and he has good size and length for the position, but he will be limited to run blocking in tight quarters and his lack of overall athleticism and body control could make him too leaky in pass protection to ever see the field as a starter.
Sounds like a fine replacement for Harrison/Thornton as a swing depth OG/OT. A couple of other comments I found from some mock drafts from last season:
Quote:
Cooper’s film during the SEC season profiles as a right side of the line blocker, either tackle or guard. He sinks his hips well and drives downhill during run blocking. Cooper’s pass blocking is above average, and will need refinement while he settles into a position. Playing Alabama tough and winning head to head matchups is no easy task.

While Cooper was overshadowed by his higher-profile teammate Laremy Tunsil, Cooper is a solid tackle in his own right and has experience on both sides of the line — he started at left tackle for the first seven games of 2015 while Tunsil was suspended.

Cooper has four years of starting experience at the collegiate level — but with three different programs. He started out at Bowling Green as a left tackle before transferring to a junior college (DuPage) in order transfer to a bigger program without being forced to sit out a year as a transfer.

It worked. Cooper has been a starter for the Ole Miss Rebels the past two seasons and definitely has the build of an NFL tackle at 6’4″ and 303 pounds.

While Fahn Cooper looks the part of an NFL offensive lineman, he does struggle with athleticism, particularly change of direction and lateral movement. He also needs to work on snap anticipation, as he mistimes the snap periodically.

Rob Rang and Dane Brugler over at CBS Sports called Cooper a “draftable” prospect, but had little else to say about the second-best tackle from Ole Miss.

Cooper is a solid prospect for the 49ers and could very well grow into a starting-caliber right tackle in the NFL. I think he has a better chance of becoming a starting tackle for the 49ers than the 49ers previous pick, John Theus. Cooper will need some time to learn the ropes at the next level, but he seems to have his head on straight — unlike former teammate Laremy Tunsil — and will put in the work.
I like where our O-Line was heading by the end of 2016 so if that is Philbin, then he has another young 2016 draftee to work with alongside Kelly, Clark, Haeg and Blythe.

Cheers,
