Default 7/30 star report on camp

https://www.indystar.com/story/sport...d/65387418007/

Quote:
. WESTFIELD — The Colts’ decision-makers have been adamant that they are better at the wide receiver position than it seems from the outside, even though there is little proven production beyond Michael Pittman Jr.

For at least one night in training camp, it was easy to see why Indianapolis believes in the potential of Parris Campbell and Ashton Dulin.

Campbell has been one of the highlights of training camp through the first three practices, establishing an instant connection with quarterback Matt Ryan on routes over the middle, and he made a pair of huge plays in front of a packed house at Grand Park on Saturday night.

Blazing through the middle of the field, Campbell got on top of Nick Cross, and although the rookie safety was still in pretty good position, his head was turned away from the quarterback, so Ryan let fly down the field, trying to get the ball to Campbell before free safety Julian Blackmon could come over.

Campbell went up and snatched the ball before Cross could turn his head, putting together the kind of explosive play Indianapolis envisioned when he was drafted. On the next snap, Campbell came free over the middle again, hauling in another strike from Ryan for a first down.

Dulin also made two catches in 11-on-11 work, the first on a slant from Ryan, the second on a diving play down the field on a great throw from backup quarterback Nick Foles. Indianapolis head coach Frank Reich has long believed in Dulin’s potential, and he said on Saturday night that Dulin will play a role in the offense after making 13 catches and two touchdowns last season.

Whether or not Campbell and Dulin can reward the Colts’ faith in them remains to be seen. Campbell has to stay healthy, and Dulin still has to make the final leap from special teams ace to a significant member of the offense, the way Zach Pascal did for Indianapolis the past three seasons.

But all they can do at this point is make plays in practice, and the two receivers were hard to miss on Saturday night.

Update on Colts pass rush

The Colts were in shoulder pads for the first time Saturday, allowing the offensive and defensive lines to go full bore for the first time, both in 1-on-1 pass rush drills and in full 11-on-11 work.

Kwity Paye stood out in the 1-on-1 drills, beating Braden Smith with a long-arm on his first rush, then winning with a secondary move against Dennis Kelly later. In 11-on-11, a Paye rush from the left side forced Ryan up into DeForest Buckner on one snap, and although Ryan pulled the ball down and scrambled, it looked like Buckner might have come away with a sack.

For the second time in three practices, Yannick Ngakoue blew up a play in the backfield, stopping Nyheim Hines on an end-around.

Ben Banogu beat rookie Bernhard Raimann off the left side on two consecutive snaps, including one that likely would have been a sack of Foles if defenders were allowed to hit the quarterback.

Mano a mano

Isaiah Rodgers found himself on both sides of arguably the two most spectacular plays of the 1-on-1 battles that pit the wide receivers and tight ends against the defensive backs.

The first one hurt a bit, a fact Rodgers admitted after the practice. Rookie Alec Pierce beat Rodgers off of the line and out-ran him to a deep ball, prompting enormous cheers from the full house.

Rodgers made up for it on his next snap, running with Keke Coutee down the field, then going up and picking off the deep ball for a leaping interception reminiscent of the three he made in a breakout 2021 season. On his third 1-on-1 snap, Rodgers was matched up against Hines, and he broke up a crossing route.

Facing a battle against Brandon Facyson for the third cornerback role — Facyson has played with Stephon Gilmore and Kenny Moore II so far — Rodgers had to slide from his usual outside spot into the nickel due to a late injury.

“I was a little down before practice, knowing we had a guy down. I had to change my role today from playing outside to inside,” Rodgers said. “I didn’t really prepare, but the guys around me helped lift me up.”

Slip and slide

Footing has been an issue through the first two days of outdoor practices on the Grand Park fields. Players at all positions have lost their footing.

The heavy rains that hit central Indiana in the week leading up to training camp took a toll on the practice fields.

“The field’s still a little damp from that rain that we had,” Reich said. “You guys saw the other day, it was pretty slippery out here. I was hoping that it would be back to normal, but it probably just needs another day.”

Unlike most of central Indiana, which had gone dry over the summer, the practice fields at Grand Park had been getting water in preparation for training camp.

“The fields are in great shape, but there was a lot of rain,” Reich said. “It was coming down hard up here.”

Colts injury report

Tight end Mo Alie-Cox and cornerback Stephon Gilmore collided on a pass near the sideline halfway through the practice. Both were slow to get up, but after taking a short break and being looked at by the trainers, Gilmore returned to full participation in the final couple of periods of practice, including 11-on-11 work.

Alie-Cox played the next play, but the big tight end then went into the injury tent with trainers. When the veteran tight end reemerged, he went through running and agility drills in an effort to return to practice, but trainers ultimately wrapped his left knee in ice and held him out the rest of the session.

“Mo tweaked his knee a little bit, but I don’t think it’s anything serious,” Reich said. “We just kind of held him out, just to be safe.”

Third-year offensive lineman Carter O’Donnell left the practice with trainers shortly before the end.

Four Colts did not participate at all. Shaquille Leonard (back) and Michael Strachan (knee) remain on the physically unable to perform list. Cornerback Tony Brown was on the field but did not participate, and defensive tackle Chris Williams, who was injured in the first practice of training camp, was wearing a boot on his right foot.

Buckner, who was limited in the first two practices as he manages a minor back injury, took a lot more snaps in 11-on-11 work on Saturday night.

Quick game

Ryan is not much of a runner — he’s never had more than 147 rushing yards in a season — but he’s not exactly immobile, either. Ryan has looked natural on rollouts, and he scrambled for a nice gain on one play. … Anthony Chesley broke up a deep ball from Ryan to Pittman Jr., a play that the offense wanted flagged, but the referees didn’t agree. … Third-year defensive end Kameron Cline flashed a couple of times as a pass rusher in team work, recording a “sack” of Sam Ehlinger to wrap up the practice.
