Default Colts draft OT Matt Goncalves - Round 3, Pick 79

After the trade up, the Colts add some depth for the OL.

The Colts drafted Pittsburgh OL Matt Goncalves at No. 79 overall in the third round.

He has experience at both tackle spots but could move inside in the NFL. Built as a pass protector at 6-6 and 327 pounds.

Matt Goncalves is a fascinating pick by the Colts here.

Missed most of last season due to an injury but a fantastic mover on tape.

I personally viewed him as a tackle but a lot of teams see him as a guard

Matt Goncalves is likely the team's swing lineman this next season.

Backup at both guard spots with the potential to kick out to tackle in a pinch.

Should get a chance to start at guard next season if/when Indy lets Fries walk in 2025

Matt Goncalves was drafted in round 3 pick 79 in the 2024 draft class.

He scored a 7.69 RAS out of a possible 10.00.

This ranked 319 out of 1377 OT from 1987 to 2024.

So do they for sure see this guy as a guard? I mean, has anyone from the Colts actually said that?

I see a lot of people assuming he’ll be a guard but I haven’t seen anything official.

Ballard seems to think he can play any OL position. Keep in mind that this guy did not give up a sack in '22 or '23, although he only played in 3 games in'23. Also only 4 penalties in that time.

At OG, Goncalves's RAS improves to 8.55.

Confirmation of an expected move - it appears the Colts plan for RG next season will be Matt Goncalves. At least that is the plan for now.

Quote:
"The plan is to move Matty in there and let him play in there, and I'm really excited," offensive line coach Tony Sparano Jr. said.
Quote:
"When you're evaluating players coming out of college, you have to look at the full skillset. Will Fries was a tackle at Penn State," Sparano said. "Matt is a big man (at 6-foot-6 and 327 pounds). He's power. He's got length. He's really deceptively very light on his feet for his size. He's quick. He can get out in space.
Quote:
"... Plus, he's a really tough and physical player. For our guards, that is non-negotiable. They have to be that way. And he is that way."

Maybe they will alternate pulling him and Nelson as lead blocker. That would keep defenses on their toes.
