Default Colts draft DE Dayo Odeyingbo - Round 2, Pick 54

With the run of OT's in the 2nd round, Ballard doubles down on pass rush and drafts another DE.

With the No. 54 pick, the Colts take Dayo Odeyingbo, a defensive end from Vanderbilt.

Doubling down on the DE position.

And it'd be a big surprise if Indianapolis makes another pick tonight. Would probably take a 2022 pick to move up into the third.

The Colts select Vanderbilt’s DE Dayo Odeyingbo, who is coming off a torn Achilles. He’ll be cleared in August return to play late September/October. Plenty of teams had a first round grade prior to his injury.

Ian Rapaport says Odeyingbo isn't expected to be cleared to practice until August, probably can't play until October.

Of course, the same stuff was said about Julian Blackmon last year, and I learned my lesson there. We'll have to wait and see.

Quote:
Chris Ballard: "Really excited to get Dayo. ... He tore his Achilles in late January. We thought it was worth the risk."

Ballard says if he hadn't hurt himself, he would have been a first rounder. Says he was "sweating it out" hoping Dayo would fall.

Quote:
Colts nickname for Dayo: "The Human Hurricane."

"He's as disruptive a defensive player as we saw on tape this past fall."

Quote:
Morocco Brown said had Dayo Odeyingbo come out last year, he would have been up there with Javon Kinlaw.

Kinlaw was drafted by the 49ers at No. 14 last year.

I said I was gonna draft myself a couch, have a beverage and let CB #DoHisJob and #TrustTheProcess and all that good stuff.

Robert Mathis tweet after the two DEs drafted.

Insight from Colts DE Dayo Odeyingbo, who was never fully himself last year after the torn Achilles before the draft.

"At a point you’re healthy enough to play, but you don’t necessarily feel better," he said, noting he saw flexibility/explosiveness limitations on his tape.

Dayo Odeyingbo says that now that he's a full year-plus past the Achilles injury, he finally feels like himself again.

Odeyingbo also says that it's big that he gets to have a full offseason of just technical work, training...

Last year, when he was finally healthy, Odeyingbo joined midseason, and practice is mostly about game-planning.

Also says he's lined up at the Big End spot so far.

Odeyingbo has spent time this offseason working with defensive line trainer Brandon Jordan, along with getting time in with Robert Mathis

Excited to see the progress. They were stoked drafting this guy.

Brings to mind (again) the concern for Julian Blackmon coming back from his achilles. I expect he'll play this season, likely earlier than you might think. But getting back to form is a different story.

Adding Yannick and the (hopeful) development of our 2nd year players could add some real juice to the pass rush and D-line play.

If so, this defense could really be special. I am pretty excited to see them on the field.

Rushing the passer is the hardest thing to do in football. It is the only way you can play great QBs and have a chance-you have got to put pressure on them. It is the biggest thing we have lacked as a defense these past few years. Ballard knows this so he keeps trying. I'm with you in being excited about seeing what these dudes can bring. Fingers crossed

Third and long, kick Dayo inside next to Buck with Paye and Ngakue on the edges in wide nine? Gonna have to get rid of that ball quickly!

If the young kids develop, that would be the best pass rush the Colts have had in a LONG time!!!

However, just in case of slow development:

Jadeveon Clowney, Akiem Hicks, Trey Flowers, Justin Houston, Sheldon Richardson, Ndamukon Suh

None are world beaters anymore (if they ever were) but all could help add juice to our D-Line.

At this point in the off-season, none are going to break the bank either.

Just saying if this D-Line plays very well, our defense is going to be excellent.
