People can pretend to be whatever they want. I think what rubs people the wrong way is when they try and force you to pretend right along with them. If you don't, then the bigot, homophobe etc. gets spewed by the left. Doesn't matter if someone is or isn't, they will tell you that you are. If you're name is Bob and you want to dress up as Sally and dance on main street in your town, by all means do it, but don't get pissed because someone tells you, hey Bob, you're a fucking idiot.
