Default Report: Jonathan Taylor likely out for the rest of the season

Colts running back Jonathan Taylor was not on hand for most of Saturday’s epic collapse against the Vikings because he left the game with an ankle injury and it looks like he won’t be back on the field again before the start of next season.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Taylor has been diagnosed with a high ankle sprain. Taylor is still meeting with doctors about the injury, but is likely to miss the final three games of the Colts’ season.

That would end a disappointing year for Taylor, who missed three games earlier this year with an ankle injury as well. After running for nearly 3,000 yards and scoring 32 touchdowns in his first two seasons, Taylor has been limited to 861 rushing yards and four touchdowns for the 4-9-1 Colts.

Indianapolis also got limited contributions from linebacker Shaquille Leonard this season because of injuries and the downturns for the two players rank among the leading reasons why things have gone so wrong for the Colts this year. If all goes well, they’ll both be 100 percent well ahead of the AFC South club’s attempt to turn things around in 2023.

Taylor averaged 5.0 YPC in 2020.

Taylor averaged 5.5 YPC in 2021.

Taylor averaged 4.5 YPC in 2022.

The drop-off may be somewhat related to the ankle injury which has been nagging him on and off all season long, but I believe that the offensive line going from one of the best in the NFL in his first 2 seasons in 2020 and 2021 to one of the worst in the NFL in his 3rd season in 2022 is the biggest reason for the decrease.

There’s no reason to play him.

It's both the line and the injury which can't compensate for this year's lack of a threatening (deep) passing game. Interesting numbers: In 10 games in 2022, JT actually has more 20+ attempt games (7) than he had in 17 games in 2021 (6).

Maybe a bit predictable? Of course you could say the same for the last 6-7 games last year, but our line and his homerun ability was able to make it work. Take the NE game for instance... They bottled JT up for 3.8ypc all game. He busts the game-winner and all of a sudden he's got 170 yards for 5.9ypc.

This season, he's had all the grind without very much of the homerun.
