So it's long arms we need then? Man, just imagine how great Chubbs Peterson would have been on this defense. The number of blocked punts and batted down passes would have been epic. He was always very disciplined about keeping his hand open and his fingers extended all the time too.

Thats what Ballard is looking for, and its not on a tape measure. Its talent and the character to maximize their opportunity and all that other nonsense is for the gm wannabes
If you honestly think measurables don't factor in to a team's evaluation of a player, then you must not watch any of the pre-draft process. These players get measured at every stop along the way: Senior Bowl, Shrine Game, Combine, Pro Day, etc. If measurables didn't matter to GMs, why would that happen?

It's a factor that can help a pass rusher for the reasons I mentioned earlier. It's not the end all be all number, nothing is, but it's a factor that can be a positive or negative for a player in the evaluation process.

No question, but just trying (perhaps unsuccessfully) to poke a little fun. Whenever people talk about long arms I immediately think about Chubbs' freakishly long right forearm capped with that crudely carved wooden hand. I realize Happy Gilmore isn't to everyone's taste, but to me it's a classic. Better than Caddyshack (let the flaming begin!).

I appreciate both and laugh at them equally.

Unless a 40 time is involved Dam isnt having fun.

I guess so - I'll admit there was a moment where I thought, "he can't be responding to my post with a serious rebuttal on the value of long arms to a defensive lineman, can he?", but I guess Dam's all business as you suggested.

On the eternal Caddyshack vs. Happy Gilmore debate, Caddyshack was a good movie, but I never cared much for the Bill Murray character chasing around the puppet gopher. Sacrilegious, I know. I liked everything else about the movie, though.

That's what most people say when I say that, so you're not alone. To me, Caddyshack's a good movie, but overrated a little for the reasons I stated. Happy Gilmore is pretty much great from beginning to end.
