Default Colts reach deal with OT Julién Davenport

This signing has been expected for several days. Zak Keefer had mentioned this possibility a few times.

Looks like the back-up tackle positions will now be Davenport and Tevi instead of Clark and Green.

One thing that sticks out - both Tevi and Davenport have a lot of game experience. There are 72 games started between Tevi + Davenport vs. only 23 games started between Clark + Green.

O-Line depth is always a concern in the NFL. There just does not seem to be enough guys who can play quality time in the trenches to man all 32 teams at 9 or 10 players deep.

While Tevi and Davenport are neither good quality starters, they are pretty good guys to have as a 6th blocker and as short term depth.

Tevi has played at least 790 snaps in each of the past three years. His PFF grade shows that he is only average in the NFL (52.9, 59.8, 52.3 in those three years) but average as your 3rd/4th OT is not a bad thing.

Davenport also started in '18 and '19 with PFF grades in the 50s. His 2020 grade was 71.3 which is of a good quality starter but it was earned on only 53 snaps. That seems out of place.

I would not expect miracles to occur if either were called upon to start many games in 2021 but both are better backup OTs than the team has had in quite a while.

Their signings are a perfect setup to either drafting a rookie in the 1st or 2nd round of the NFL draft to be the starter -- OR -- if we miss on an OT we really like in the draft, signing a remaining veteran starter (Fisher, Villanueva or Okung) to start for us in 2021.
