o The Pro Bowl always was a gross charade, asking players to play an exhibition game in a brutal sport in which an injury can change the course of a player's career in a single play ...... it has gotten progressively more ridiculous over the years though, almost to the point of being on par with professional wrestling. o

It should have been flag-football all along, since that is essentially what it has been for decades. My comment was not a critique of the actual danger for injuries, because there really was none ...... the players pretending to play tackle football was what made the game absurd. I would occasionally watch parts of the game out of curiosity, and the "goal-line stands" that the defense pretended to make were straight out of the WWF. I don't blame the players for doing what they did (hardly putting up any resistance for fear of getting injured in a meaningless game), I blame the league for putting on such a farce in the first place. o

Surprisingly, the relative financial incentive you get for winning the Pro Bowl is actually higher now than it was in 2000. $84k for winning the Pro Bowl is about 3.1% of the average NFL salary. In 2000 you got $25k which was around 2.2%. Not the most scientific metric, but interesting. It must be a generational thing? I mean, it happened in the NBA as well. I remember the All-Star game being more competitive and there being an East-West pride to the game. Now it's just pre-game shootarounds and a 200-198 final score. |

The NBA All-Star game was a more competitive game back in the 1970's. It changed soon afterward. The NFL Pro Bowl has always been a joke/charade, even back in the 1970's ...... it gradually got worse over the next 3 to 4 decades, but it was very bad (and noticeably so) in the first place, unlike the NBA All-Star game. o
