Default Unnecessary Roughness ???

o

Apparently, it's not necessary for the defense to stop a player from gaining more yardage.

Only thing I see is that Mahomes was already going out of bounds, so it was not really necessary. That said, a hit is part of the game, no matter who is getting hit.

As far as the defender was concerned, Mahomes was probably going out of bounds, but there would have been nothing stopping him from changing his mind at the last second and turning up-field for a few more yards. My biggest complaint with the last 20-25 years of being overly protective of offensive players is that ballcarriers (quarterbacks, running backs, and receivers) are allowed to push and fight for extra yardage (they call it "second effort"), while defensive players are penalized for doing what is naturally part of the game ...... and that is to make absolutely sure that a player goes down by hitting him hard, wrapping him up, and driving him to the ground.

Football is an extremely aggressive and physical game, and I believe that in an effort to make it "safer" the NFL has actually not only made it unfair, but has made it more dangerous for defensive players ...... you can get hurt if you're constantly worried about getting penalties for unnecessary roughness and/or late hits that are not late in a sport that is so fast and so violent. If I were a head coach, I would tell my defenders to just continue to play the game the way that they were taught to since they were in high school, and to let the chips fall where they may with unfair roughing calls ...... I would rather have a 15-yard penalty called against my player as opposed to having my player lose his natural instincts in a sport as fast and as violent as is football.
