The Kansas City Chiefs ...... a Strange, but True Divisional Playoff History
o
Since the merger of the AFL and the NFL in 1970, the Chiefs have a long history of losing strange divisional playoff games, particularly ones in which they are playing at home and favored in. In 1971, the Chiefs lost the longest game in NFL history in double overtime to the Miami Dolphins ...... in spite of Ed Podolak's 350 all-purpose yards, which remain a post-season record to this day. Also, the first pure place-kicker to ever be elected to the Hall-of-Fame (Jan Stenerud) missed a chip-shot field goal with less than a minute remaining in the 4th quarter, which would have won the game for the Chiefs. In 1995 the Chiefs were the #1 seed in the AFC with a record of 13-3, and were heavily favored against Jim Harbaugh's Indianapolis Colts ...... but lost by a score of 10-7. In 1997 they again were 13-3 and the #2 seed in the AFC, but lost in the divisional playoffs to John Elway's Broncos, who would go on to beat the defending world champion Green Bay Packers in the Super Bowl. In 2003 it was again the Indianapolis Colts haunting the heavily favored, #2 seeded Chiefs again. This time the Colts beat the Chiefs in a 38-31 shootout IN A GAME IN WHICH NEITHER TEAM PUNTED. ) In 2016 the Chiefs lost yet another divisional playoff game on their home field in a game in which they outscored their opponents, 2 touchdowns to 0. They did manage to win one divisional playoff game in 1993, when Joe Montana and company took down the Houston Oilers in the Astrodome ........ but that was on the road, and (unlike the numerous other heartbreaking divisional losses which they have sustained), they were not the favorites to win that game. The Kansas City Chiefs ...... a strange (and painful), but true divisional playoff history. o

Also, I only included games which had major historical importance and/or a rather strange quality to them ........ so there were 2 that I intentionally omitted. There was nothing particularly noteworthy about the Chiefs' 1991 Divisional playoff loss to the Bills in Buffalo by a score of 37-14, or their 2015 Divisional playoff loss to the Patriots in Foxborough by a score of 27-20. The Chiefs were heavy underdogs to the Bills in 1991, and they lost accordingly (37-14.) The Chiefs were moderate underdogs to the Patriots in 2015, and they lost accordingly (the score was 27-13 in favor of the Patriots late in the 4th quarter before the Chiefs added a touchdown with only 1:13 remaining to close the gap to 27-20.) o

Easy answer Indian curse for a racist name. Same reason the Redskins have Dan Snyder. Mahomes will probably get smallpox soon or something.

I've been thinking that this is probably the best path for the Colts. They are playing completely with house money right now. I'll be rooting for the Ravens tomorrow, because if the Colts can somehow beat the Chiefs and the Ravens can somehow beat the Cheaters, I like the Colts chances of taking the Lamar Hunt trophy in Baltimore. That said, this has already been a hugely successful season no matter what happens from here.

If I were a Chiefs fan, I would be sweating buckets at the thought of playing the Colts at home in the AFCDG due to the history. It obviously doesn’t impact the game at all, but that stadium could get quiet if the Colts get off to a strong start.

The past doesn't matter. This is the first year where the Chiefs have a legit franchise QB in a VERY long time.
The good news is that they are coming into the playoffs losing several games at the end of the year. Being without Kareem Hunt is hurting them. Should be a shootout though. It's going to be a fun game to watch. |

I think the Chiefs win, but I’m eager to see how the Colts fare. Are they merely a 2nd tier team (right now), or is their line and defense playing well enough to give them a decent shot against anyone?
Also, how will Maholmes look in his first playoff game? A couple mistakes could be all the difference. |
