Default Colts draft S Julian Blackmon - Round 3, Pick 85

At 85, Colts grab Julian Blackmon, safety out of Utah.

You know Chris Ballard wasn't going to let the entire night go by without adding some defense.

Blackmon says he’s 4 months out of surgery, and it’s going well. Stops short of saying he expects to be back in September-October. Depends on how injury responds.

Blackmon says he felt like safety was a better fit. He asked the Utah coaches to move because the Utes had a lot of guys who could play CB.

Ballard says the Colts know that Blackmon might not be able to help them until October, but they really like him because of his versatility and his value. Sounds like Indy likes him as a Swiss Army knife.

It seems like the Colts just keeping drafting safeties hoping to hit on one.

I would think Blackmon could have been had a round later with an ACL injury. I wish the Colts would have drafted a left tackle instead.

Seems like we could have waited to draft him. On top of some OL Neville Gallimore, who a lot of folks here were high on, was there for the taking if we had stayed at 75.

From his comments Ballard clearly had Blackmon circled as a guy that he really wanted to draft and didn't want to risk him not being there in the 4th. Based on his college production, if Blackmon fully recovers from his ACL then is probably worth the pick.

I don’t know if I like this pick. At least not with an acl tear. Seems high. Player looks good when healthy. But he will be seriously behind with the short off season and the injury.

Ballard did a videoconference last night with the local media that I saw on FB last night. When Kevin Bowen asked him whether depth on the OL was a priority in this draft, he seemed really surprised by the question and then (I think) answered a bit defensively that they have depth on the line....Clark and the other guy whose name I can't remember. Then he said something about having alot more time before the season starts to continue to add depth. My read of all this was that he's not going to do anything in this draft re the OL.

Of course, injury is always a possibility but I wonder if Castonzo committed to playing for 2 more years when he signed that contract......lines up to what we know Rivers want to do as well (play for 2 more years even though they only aligned on a 1 year). Maybe Ballard is planning to draft a new LT next year??

Blackmon will open the season on the Active / Non-football injury list. Not surprising based on the original time line of a September / October return.

Colts believe Blackmon, a third-round pick, has tons of upside at the free safety spot. (His tape at Utah proves it.) But this was always going to take time. Knee injury in December. Ballard said after the draft he's expecting Blackmon back at full strength around Sept/October.

Ballard indicated that the Colts may activate Blackmon in 2-3 weeks time.

Help coming at safety for the Colts as they hope to activate 2020 3rd-round pick Julian Blackmon in 2-3 weeks, GM Chris Ballard told Bill Polian & me on our SiriusXM NFL training camp show. The former Utah Football DB is on active/NFI coming off a torn ACL suffered in December
