It worked w/Manning. Doesn't seem sustainable to me either but if he can keep that defense playing at a high level and roll QBs through without too much trouble maybe he'll strike gold again. It'd be hard to fire a guy that makes two SB wins happen.

Interesting nugget on story I'm working on how the Colts selected Quenton Nelson. GM Chris Ballard went to Nelson's Pro Day and "stayed away" after that so he didn't show his hand. Colts didn't bring Nelson in for a visit. He said other teams "track" which teams are at Pro Days
Colts did same thing with Chubb. Reminder: don't read too much into player visits.

Bills apparently were willing to give up both 1st rd picks and a 2nd rd pick:

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/h...ey-chubb-fell/

They had that deal in place with the broncos but fell through when Chubb was still there. I'm sure they would have offered the same deal to Ballard, but supposedly he wouldn't budge and wanted Nelson.

Man, I don't know, two 1st rd picks and another 2nd, I think I would have let Nelson go and take that deal.

It wasn't a freestanding 2nd - the Broncos would have had to return a 3rd to the Bills. My guess is that this component would have disappeared in a Colts trade, since theoretically the Bills were getting a slightly lower 1st round pick in return - so probably our #1 for the Bills two #1s would have been the likely offer.

I doubt it. It's only 100 points difference between the 5th and 6th pick.

Yes, but consider that the Buccaneers, who had the #7 selection immediately after the Colts, did NOT receive an offer as substantial as the Broncos offer – they received #12, #53 and #56 instead. Using the point chart (which I’m not sure that NFL teams actually use at all), that’s a total of 1910 points.

By contrast, the offer the Bills made the Broncos at #5 was a bit better (nos. #12, #22 and an exchange of a Bills second round pick for a Broncos’ third round pick) and totals 2115 points – assuming the 2nd and 3rd being exchanged were the earlier of each team’s pick.

Thus, if the Bills had offered the Colts the #12 and #22 picks together, the resulting point total (1980 points) would fit nicely between the two offers.

That's only because the Bucs were idiots. They could have gotten the same deal, so could the Colts. The Bills wanted their QB and would have given that offer to any of the top spots in the draft to get him.
