The first reason is one that I don’t like, I can’t explain, and is, to some extent, indefensible. The Colts just have a problem with opening day. They’ve lost something like 12 out of the last 13, and, at some point, it goes from being a bug to a feature.

Second, the league-wide practice of treating preseason games as little more than an exercise in figuring out what your second and third teamers are going to look like means that the only action your starters see consists of one or two
Controlled scrimages and a series of game action. No one practices tackling any more, and this is deadly when you’re facing a rugged bulldozer like Derrick Henry.

Depending on how you count, the Colts were lining up either 5 or 7 new starters on D. It’s going to take more than a month preseason for Lou Anarumo to get everyone on the same page.

For whatever reason, there wasn’t a Linebacker available who could wear the green dot. The Colt’s performance, play after play in which no one was set or prepared is apt demonstration of why Defensive coordinators don’t assign the task to Defensive Backs.

The decision to match up a youngster making his first NFL start against Zay Flowers was poorly considered. At the very least, Flowers should have been double covered or schemed against. I don’t know if Lou simply overestimated what Walley brings to the table or if communication problems raised their ugly head, but…
