One of the benefits of Ballard's approach is that the Colts are well positioned to make this type of acquisition if they choose to do so, since they have lots of available cap space. Further, the price would presumably be much more reasonable given that most everyone has already spent their money elsewhere.

This being said, I wouldn't expect an immediate move, even if the Colts bring Kendricks in for a visit. There always seems to be a delay of about a month or so after the meeting before the signing is announced. I wonder if Ballard makes a modest offer, but invites the player to shop around for a few weeks to see if they can do better elsewhere. If they can't, they can return and sign the Colts original offer. Pure speculation, of course, but it seems consistent with what seems to happen with some of these free agents (Ryan Grant, Austin Howard, maybe Breeland?)
