It was a chronic issue, since 2024. It has been nagging Pierce over the last 1 and-a-half seasons. He has played through it, hoping that it would heal itself. I suppose that it got considerably better in the last off-season (in between 2024 to 2025) to give Pierce hope that it was well on its way to ceasing. When it didn't, it was too late to have surgery without missing the 2025 season, so Pierce played through it.

Arthroscopic "clean-up" surgery involves removing bone spurs, scar tissue, and loose cartilage fragments ...... it was not reported which of the 3 that Pierce had, and/or if it may have been all 3. It is considered to be minor surgery because its arthroscopic (very minimal use of a scalpel.) It takes 4-6 months to completely recover because cartilage and ligaments heal slowly.

I recently read that Pierce has been walking around in a boot, walking very gingerly. He has been training on an Alter G treadmill (an anti-gravity treadmill) as part of his physical rehab. That type of treadmill is when they strap a harness around the person to minimize the amount of weight placed on the person's legs.
