There was a slight rule change regarding IR this year.

In the past, teams had to use up a roster spot for an injured player by first including that player on the initial 53 man roster before placing him on IR a day later.

Teams can now place up to 2 players on IR and designate them to return without having to first put them on the initial 53 man roster and use up that roster space.


So the Colts could potentially use these two spots on Jelani Woods and/or Samson Ebukam. To date, they have not made any roster move for either player so they are at least considering this move which would allow them to play later in the season if they recover in time.

I'm not going to pretend to know enough about some of these positions and players to make a roster, but I sure hope Hull and Treadwell make the team, but I don't think either of them is a lock!

I like this, except Freeland. The guy was a turnstile in the Pryor mode.

I haven't paid a ton of attention to the preseason games or training camp media reports so I don't have a clue really.

When do the cuts start being announced? I figured they'd be trickling out all weekend but I haven't heard a single one yet...?

Unless there are better more likely to contribute players I would think they will, but honestly what are the odds of Ebukam returning and Woods seems like a waste of space, didn't seem like he was really pushing for a starting roll, so unless there is no one else why bother.

Cuts can happen at any time...they just need to be finished by Tuesday.

There have been a few teams that have cut a single player here and there...

And I believe the Bengals have cut a larger group of 11 players on Friday.

I think the reason why to utilize this IR / return designation is to use it as a hedge against future injuries.

Over the course of the season, more Colts will be injured. If there are more injuries to the DE or TE groups, the team may have to sign some street free agents to fill out the roster / practice squad.

If Ebukam or Woods are able to recover by the end of the season, they will be better than a street free agent and will already know the play book.

Of course, that is a big IF regarding the injury recovery.
