Smith is likely to lose his job going forward. That, or he becomes the guy who spells the two on the right side.

Smith may very well be gone sooner than I expected. Freeland is not better than him (yet), but I've been surprised at how well he's done as a rookie. If he stays on that trajectory, it looks like Ballard could eat $6m to save $28m over the final two years on Smith's deal.

Especially if injuries persist.
