The Houston Cougars have a rich history in college basketball.

In January of 1968, Elvin Hayes led the Cougars to a win over Lew Alcindor's (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) UCLA national championship team in front of more than 52,000 fans at the Astrodome.

In the early 80's, Akeem Olajuwon led the team to back to back national championship games in the 1982-83 and 1983-84 seasons ...... and prior to that, Akeem led them to the Final Four in the 1981-82 season.

Guy Lewis l was the head coach of all of those great Houston teams, and he was eventually inducted into the Hall-of-Fame.


When current head coach l Kelvin Sampson l took over the program 8 seasons ago, they were a losing team. Sampson has built them back into a national power, as they are ranked #2 in the country heading into the NCAA tournament ...... will Sampson's latest Cougars team finally win the national championship that has eluded all of their previous great teams for so many decades ???
