Nick Saban Avoided the Kent State Shootings Scene by Chance

o

On May 4th of 1970, Nick Saban was finishing up his freshman year at Kent State University.

He was looking forward to playing varsity ball for that school's then head coach Don James, who would later earn a place for himself in the College Football Hall of Fame by leading the Washington Huskies to 6 Rose Bowl appearances, 4 Rose Bowl wins, and 1 National championship.

Saban was also looking forward to attending the campus rally/protest of the Vietnam War that afternoon ........however, when Saban and his roommate decided to eat lunch before walking to the scene of what became an infamous tragedy, that decision also took him out of the potential line of fire. Saban talks about his experience that day (and the feelings that still affect him) in this article.
