CB Bashaud Breeland to visit Colts

Free agent CB Bashaud Breeland has visits scheduled with the Colts and Browns this week.

That's in addition to his visits with the Raiders and Chiefs the past 2-3 days. This is the second time the Colts have checked in on Breeland; they also had him in for a visit in May. Breeland had a $24 million deal voided by the Panthers in March after he injured his foot. Breeland is a top player left on the market. There's no question he can play. He just needs to prove healthy.

Sign him

In another thread I said that we should pick up Breeland instead of paying a cap penalty to the players association. Not sure if we are still in that financial landscape.

Certainly not if he isn't healthy, but if he is healthy it seems like a solid FA signing.

Why would we be paying a cap penalty?

Ballard is sitting on too much cash

Breeland would probably start alongside Wilson. I'd feel way better about our CBs with guys like Hairston and Desir as nickel/depth instead of fighting for a starting job.

I believe he is concerned about not reaching the cap floor. There is a minimum amount of money each team must spend (no idea what the amount is).

I don't think the $$ Ballard is sitting on is that big of a deal. I would rather a GM show some discipline and stick to the $ amount they think a guy is worth. Apparently the other teams in the NFL don't want to pay him what he thinks he is worth, so there is time for a deal to be made.

I thought it was a minimum average over several years, not a single year, that would cause a team to have to pay a penalty?

Shreck must be on vacation, or this question would be answered.

Or, you know, I have a life outside of being a Freak! :)

$16.5m. That is what Ballard needs to spend of 2018-2019 NFL year money in order to not trigger the salary cap floor penalty for the rolling 4-year period.

New contracts or new money to existing players all counts. If he does not spend it on free agents, he could do a contract extension in 2018 for a guy like Good or Vinny or someone else that he would "re-sign" in 2019 but instead do it during the 2018 season and have it count towards this year's money.

But, he need to spend $16.5m more in player money to avoid the penalty.

Walk Worthy,
