Benefits of extending rookie deals early

My new 30 minute podcast that goes over the week 1 Free Agency deals that directly impacted the Colts, and then I go over the possibility of Ballard extending guys like Ryan Kelly, Marlon Mack, and other draft picks early in their rookie contracts.
Let me know what you guys think about what I have to say about it.

Extensions are in the 2nd half of the pod.

A lot of people don't realize players like J.J. Watt had is rookie contract extended 2 years early. Yes, Teams can do that. I name off a few players I think the Colts could benefit from doing so. Check it out, and let me know if you think i'm on to something, or reaching a bit, please.

I’m still planning to listen to this, but I think this is definitely something Ballard will look to do. If he frontloads some of these extensions with the cap rollover, he’ll have more available cap to re-sign other guys in 2020 and 2021.

It sounds like a good idea, and it is very team friendly. Just don't expect it with Nelson or Leonard. They will want to get to FA and cash in.

That isn’t the point. Of course you lock of Nelson and Leonard at expensive rates. Having this much cap space, rolling it over, and front loading some deals will make it more likely for them to afford their own 2nd and 3rd tier players or guys who break out late. There's a reason blue chip guys don't hit the free agent market. It’s guys like Wilson, Moore, and Walker who it affects.

The Eagles (Andy Reid years) were notorious for extending guys early and it largely worked out for them.
