that sucks. didnt see that one coming.

daedge 02-02-2017 05:23 AM

Shocked at this news.

His departure sure leaves a giant void and creates yet another headache for Chris Ballard.

He's got his work cut out.

RCAChainGang 02-02-2017 06:46 AM

Dang, legitimately one of my favorite players. Didn't see that coming.

Wyatt 02-02-2017 07:02 AM

woke up to reading this on facebook, thought it was bs....this sucks

I liked Pat a lot. He was a very consistent punter, kickoff specialist and holder on FG and PAT attempts. He honestly will be missed in the locker room, I am sure, for his attitude and ability to keep things light.

Finding a replacement for him is not as easy as it might sound. There are currently only 3 punters who are listed as unrestricted free agents:

40 year old Shane Lechler, HOU
31 year old Britton Colquitt, CLE
27 year old Jeff Locke, MIN

and one guy who is a RFA:

26 year old Colton Schmidt, BUF

There will be some movement of Punters during the off-season and a few will probably be released after the draft and such but there is not much to pick from in free agency.

There are only 2 guys that Walter Football thinks could/should be drafted at the Punter position:

JK Scott, Alabama
Austin Rehkow, Idaho

I like Rehkow because he also kicked FGs for them and was 26 of 29 during his senior year. Flexibility is great! It probably also indicates that he did kickoff duties for them as well so there is that.

My guess is that the Colts would have to use a 6th round draft pick in order to secure one of those guys. That is fine with me since our low round picks rarely seem to contribute much (Good is the only 6th or 7th round pick to really contribute since the 2010 7th round pick of Kavell Conner).

Sadly, neither Scott nor Rehkow are black so Omaha will not be happy.

This sucks. Godspeed, Patty Mac.

Cheers,

Wyatt 02-02-2017 08:16 AM

I'd be okay with signing Lechler, especially in his prime....fill the void for 3 or 4 years and then draft the Westfield kid Will Harrison.

Yeah, tough first week for him. Having an incompetent coaching staff forced on you for at least a year and then losing one of the hand full of players on the team that's actually really good.

albany ed 02-02-2017 10:01 AM

I'm sure the college ranks are filled with many capable punters, so that part can be replaced w/o even using a draft pick. What made him so special was his dual role of punter and kick off specialist. I think that made Vinitari more accurate. Also he was a whacky guy and that was made him one of my favorites.

Brylok 02-02-2017 10:42 AM

The best punter in the NFL quits the team so he can go to New England and join Bartool Sports. In the words of Jim Cornette, "Thank you, fuck you, bye".

Then, maybe Irsay and/or Ballard can coax him back for one more year.

articles say he is staying in indy while working for them. at least he isnt defecting to the north east.

Brylok 02-02-2017 02:28 PM

Those Patriots fan douchebags are national now? I'm glad I don't pay attention to any of that crap.

Dam8610 02-02-2017 02:35 PM

Are they paying him more than what he was getting to punt?

DrSpaceman 02-02-2017 04:12 PM

Sad to see him go.

But I am sure he will have a great post NFL career, will be showing up in the media and broadcasts for many years.

Rehkow can blast the fucking ball:

Quote:

Rekhow is Idaho’s do it all specialist. He punts, he kicks off and he kicks field goals. This year he has gone 18-for-20 on field goal attempts, with all of those attempts coming inside 50 yards. As a punter he is tied for the highest single punt hang-time lead this year, with one punt staying in the air for an incredible 5.37 seconds. 17 of his 35 punts have landed inside the opposing 20 yard line, and just 10 have been returned.
https://www.profootballfocus.com/col...s-and-punters/

I do like the sound of a guy that can kick the living shit out of the ball like that.

If we do draft a guy, it'll probably take some time before we develop him to the point where he's as skillful as far situational punting as McAfee is/was.

Does Dave Toub have a special assistant or anything in Kansas City? Maybe Ballard could bring in a guy like that to help groom a young punter.

I realize that the fact that we'll need a new Punter and having an ace Special teams coach to develop him is probably about Reason #504,343,234 why having Toub over Pagano would've been more ideal, but this does twist the blade just a little bit.

Brylok 02-02-2017 05:51 PM

Devon Bell is on the practice squad. I imagine he will get the opportunity to show what he can do.

jasperhobbs 02-02-2017 06:37 PM

McAfee will be missed. Awesome punter

Coltsalr 02-02-2017 07:23 PM

http://www.espn.com/blog/indianapoli...-signing-bonus

Colts are saving $2.8M in cap space on McAfee retiring.

That's...nice, I suppose.

Indiana V2 02-02-2017 07:38 PM

Dang, this sucks, but good luck to Pat, and thanks for the memories.

Thorgrim 02-02-2017 08:49 PM

This actually pisses me off. Easily one of our best players walks away. I understand why but damn.

Puck 02-04-2017 05:53 AM

He will be on NFL network or one of the other stations before long. He is funny and interesting, and you can actually understand what he says. And he pulls no punches

meaning

he isn't black and talks in a way you are familiar with since you are from indiana.

he really isn't that funny. his shtick will wear thin very quickly.

They're based out of Boston, but he told them only way he would agree is they give him a spot in Indianapolis. He got his demand which also helped him decide.

I heard him on JMV saying the2nd half of the season he was on pain meds every week and after games he couldn't hardly walk the next day

I'll miss the personality on the field, but hopefully our Offense plays better next year and we only need a guy to boot it once a game
