Don Newcombe Died

Don Newcombe, who along with Jackie Robinson and Roy Campanella helped pave the way for integration in Major League Baseball as one of its first/pioneer Black players of the 20th Century, has died.

Newcombe was the first player ever to win the Cy Young award AND the MVP award in the same season (1956), at a time in which such a feat was even more difficult than it is today ........ ONLY ONE Cy Young was awarded for the entire Major Leagues at that time. That season, Newcombe led the Majors in Wins (27), Winning Percentage (.794), and WHIP (0.989.)

Newcombe was also the first player ever to win the Rookie of the Year award, the Cy Young Award, and the MVP award during his career ........ a feat that was not equalled until Justin Verlander did so in 2011.

Newcombe also missed 2 full seasons of his Major League career, due to service in the Korean War.

Incredibly, Newcombe was never elected to the Hall-of Fame.

Newcombe was 92 years-old.
