Mack will make something out of nothing several times this year and it may be enough to swing a game or two.

Major concern is ball security, though. They need to get him out of the habit of holding the ball like a loaf of bread.

I really like this kid. He's explosive and possess great long speed.

My only concern is that it may take awhile for him to get acclimated to receiving hand offs from under center as opposed to the shotgun like he did a lot in college.

He has good acceleration and he knows how to look off potential tacklers.

I'm curious how he's going to do between the tackles. The quarterback he played with last year is an exceptional athlete as well, and you could tell that he was able to take advantage of that in the running game.

He uses his head fakes like Addai used too. He's good at using his eyes to look defenders off, using a feinting burst to put defenders in bad position and using his legitimate burst to take advantage of that.

He looks scrawny to me though. Not really a "move the chains" type guy but a 3rd down change of pace guy, which is not a bad deal given we have two bruisers in Gore and Turbin.

Sometimes I wonder if it's a lack of discipline or if there are times during the game where the guy just feels so "on" he doesn't think he has too.

Same thing, I guess.

Exactly. This is a guy who you want to get the ball in space and let him go to work, not a guy you want to run up the middle 20 times a game.

Ball security is definitely a concern at least in this clip. Is fumbling an issue for him or is it just this clip that is worrisome?

Anyway, that pull away ability showcased in that clip is impressive. He looks like a guy who has a strong will to not be tackled.

If his home run ability comes with an increased risk of fumbling compared to the rest our backs, I'll have to take it.

I'm not. I watched Highlights of both. They seem like the same players. Wonder why they are not giving Ferguson another chance.... or release him trade him whatever

Ferguson does not have the size nor speed this guy does.

Coming out of college I would have said Ferguson was more elusive, but he has been underwhelming professionally.

Guys play scheme-specific roles all over the league. He may turn into a true lead back, but his floor fills a need for this team.

albany ed 05-01-2017 06:48 AM

He has a tendency to cough up the football. Hopefully, like Tiki Barber, this can be coached out of him.

FatDT 05-01-2017 10:24 AM

Seems like he will make a few big plays but also hurt the team with dumb mistakes. Watching clips of this guy, the way he holds the ball is really stupid. It is hard to imagine this guy ever being a 3 down back. If he sticks with the team I think it's as a committee, with another back taking the tough yardage runs.

Mack seems like a space player. Dangerous in the open field. But will need to learn how to read blockers and be patient. A lot of his big plays seem like lucky accidents where he reversed field, squirted through, and then was not tackled easily. Which is useful, he just doesn't seem like a complete back at all.

Surprised to see he ran a 4.5, seems a lot faster than that on the field.

Sorry for the giant image, wish we could shrink the max image size a bit

That is sweet, Wyatt. I did not think that Mack was a good pass blocker but those stats show that he is.

That is a good deal.

Cheers,

I keep reading mack has breakaway speed yet I see his 40 time is 4.5. Fast but not a blazer.

40 time isn't always a true judge of speed on the field

FatDT 05-07-2017 04:06 PM

In college he played very fast. Hope that extends to the NFL.

i think it will if he can handle the nfl. meaning if he can learn how to run in the nfl and actually gets to see the field.
