Colts Sign NT Hankins 3 years, $30MM, $14.5MM G

Schefter reports that it’s a three-year, $30 million contract with $14.5 million guaranteed. Hankins had reportedly been holding out for a $10 million a year average, and those numbers suggest he has received it, although it’s possible that the contract is structured in such a way that he’s not really going to see all $30 million.

Coltsalr 04-13-2017 01:49 PM

Colts Sign DT Johnathan Hankins

Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter
Former Giants' DT Johnathan Hankins, the top-rated available free agent, is signing a 3-year, $30M deal with Colts, source tells ESPN.

So there's our big fish! (pardon the pun)

Yes, it's a fuckton of money. No, I don't care. We're desperate at NT and we have the cash and it's not a strong position in this year's draft.

Good job, Ballard.

VeveJones007 04-13-2017 01:50 PM

Glad Ballard realized he didn't need to save that cap space to re-sign many draft picks the next two years. We'll see how good Hankins is at NT as opposed to DT.

Puck 04-13-2017 01:53 PM

We needed him I don't care if we over paid a little.... It's not my money

FatDT 04-13-2017 01:54 PM

Well holy shit. Ok then. I am not sure he's worth $10 mil/year. And I'm not convinced he'll produce like he did in NY since he won't have JPP, Harrison, and Vernon playing on the line with him. I hope this doesn't blow up in the teams' face. But I guess we can afford it, he's young, and if he plays to his ceiling he should be good enough to build around.

Coltsalr 04-13-2017 01:56 PM

VeVeJones beat me by a minute. Mods please delete.

sherck 04-13-2017 02:06 PM

Wow, $10m a year. He better produce!

We are a better team then this morning so that is great. We were not fixing NT any other way this year.

But...wow. That is a lot of cheddar.

Cheers,

Worth the risk.

A sorely needed position for this team.

If he is nothing more than just a solid starter, he still instantly upgrades the DL

Defensive front is instantly improved. $14.5M guaranteed isn't too shabby a deal for either side. I like it. In Ballard I trust.

sherck 04-13-2017 02:16 PM

NT = Hankins, Woods, Parry

DT = Anderson, Ridgeway, Parry

DE= Langford, Anderson, Hunt

That is not a terrible 7 man rotation if Anderson and Langford return to 2015 form.

I would be okay with the Colts skipping D-Line in this draft if we only have 7 picks. Pass Rush, CB, CB, ILB, RB, TE, ILB, Safety all higher priority.

Cheers,

Butter 04-13-2017 02:30 PM

I like it since I am guessing 10 mill of the 14 guaranteed is in the first year. He sucks he should be easy to cut.

And it won't limit them from making other moves the next two years. Pay him a bunch up front and leave the back end of the deal flexible.

Welcome to Indy Big Hank, this should help further Ballard's assertion of BPA in the draft

BPA in rounds 1 and 2 should be Reuban Foster, OLB[Rush] or CB. Those are our largest needs on defense.

If BPA is not there, then trade back for more mid-round picks and then pick BPA at CB or OLB[Rush].

I like this move. Nose tackle seems to be the one spot that this draft is not good or deep. We payed to much but what was the alternative? I think we overpayed maybe 3 million a year. Worth it in that there were not good alternatives at NT. Draft defense.

I agree, deal was a little salty perhaps. Not sure of the structure but imagine if he pulls an Art Jones he will be gone. But I do like what the guy can bring to the Colts.

omahacolt 04-13-2017 05:50 PM

There we go. Not my ideal guy but I will take it. Well done Ballard

Spike 04-13-2017 06:02 PM

Damn! Starting to like Ballard more and more. Not sure how all this shakes out, but on the surface Ballard has done a hell of a job in free agency.

None of it matters if he doesn't draft well. These UFA moves range from meh to good, but the draft is where he needs to hit his doubles and home runs.

Yep, this was a good signing, but if this team is going to succeed, it will be because they drafted well in the next 2-3 drafts.

You keep spelling OL wrong

Happy to have @BigTimeHank on my side again. Can't wait to relive college practice nightmares every day in practice this year @johnesimon51

If he drafts a stud OL I will not be butthurt, but I still think a solid OLB/MLB or CB will do more to improve the team.

apballin 04-13-2017 10:16 PM

Great signing every good 3-4 defense has the hog in the middle

This is huge and unexpected good shit Ballard

Brylok 04-13-2017 10:32 PM

Been happy about it all day. It's 9:30 PM and I feel the same. It's nice to feel optimistic about the team for a change.

I didn't mention the draft, all I said was that I am starting to like Ballard more and more and I was not sure how all this shakes out, but on the surface Ballard has done a hell of a job in free agency. Plus, I disagree with the meh range on UFA moves, I think Ballard has done a hell of a job. If he fucks up the draft, then I will be one of the first to rip him a new ass. Of course he needs to draft well, that's a no brainer.

FatDT 04-14-2017 12:06 AM

If this fatty lives up to his hype then it could be the key to having a decent defense a lot sooner than I expected. An actual playmaker at NT will only help the DT and DE make plays. It'll keep blockers off the weak (for now) LBs, freeing them up to run and read the play unencumbered. It'll flow down to the DBs when he helps stop the run without backfield help and collapses the pocket a half second sooner. I just hope he's worth that contract. If he is the defense should be capable of top-half performances consistently.

rcubed 04-14-2017 01:00 AM

I like this signing. Hope it's flexible on the back end

Really thrilled about this signing. Was not looking forward to Ballard having to draft a NT this year.

Honestly, if there isn't a game-changing LB/EDGE/boundary CB player at 15 (I think the difference between bottom half round 1 pass-rushers and rounds 2-3 available pass-rushers will be minimal at best), I think this puts Colts back in play for RB again in 1st round. I'll stick to that. Haters gonna hate.

Ooooh, a running back? Omaha is gonna eat you alive.

And rightfully so, I might add.

No RB in the 1st round.

There should definitely be an impact defensive player at 15.

You can get a rb later. It isn't that big of a need this year. Quality backs can be had later just like your argument with pass rushers.

We need to get a great defense. The offense can win with less at the skill positions with a guy like Luck

I think there's our assessment of impact player, then Ballard's. So I would hope so. But I think less players probably hit the cross-section of playmaker for this defense than most fans project.

(That said, at least at CB, I sure would hope so. I'm not optimistic about EDGE or ILB at 15. But CB seems like it should happen, right?)

Long way of saying I'd rather have a dynamic young RB/slot WR/return specialist talent than a slightly better Greg Toler or something.

Butter 04-14-2017 12:54 PM

I would rather go OL than RB/WR at this point.

Well of course. But only time will tell us that. We can only go with the on paper version.

Reuben Foster might very well be there at #15 for us. I heard McShay say last night that don't be surprised if both Redidck and Jarrad Davis are gone before Foster. That would likely lead to him lasting to #15.

I don't really consider either Reddick/Davis impact players in the same mold. I'm fine with drafting Reddick at #15, but with Davis, I'd rather trade back into the 20's and grab either him or Zach Cunningham there, rather than reach for him a bit at #15.

I think that of all the pass rushers that I do like (Barnett, Tim Williams, Charles Harris, Carl Lawson) that there's a fair chance that at least one will be there in Round 2.

This OL class sucksssss.

Also I don't get why people don't think RB is a need. It's maybe not the same need as CB or LB, true, but it's a need, and bigger need than OL at that.
