Colts Final Roster Cuts - 2024 Edition
Colts make their first set of moves - total of 9 players were released or waived:
Released: WR Tyrie Cleveland S Ronnie Harrison Jr. DE Derek Rivers WR Greg Ward Waived: CB Clay Fields III K Spencer Shrader QB Kedon Slovis WR Derek Slywka LB Mike Smith Jr. https://www.colts.com/news/colts-ros...n-derek-slywka |
Harrison is surprising. Hopefully they bring him back.
|
What’s the difference between waived and released?
Edit-never mind. After a 10 second google search I found the answer. Players with less than 4 accrued seasons are waived, meaning other teams can claim their contracts. Players with more than 4 seasons are released and free to sign with another team immediately. |

nobody else will want him and this is the best opportunity for him |

Also, it was posted elsewhere but the NFLPA voted down the emergency QB rule. So that makes that final roster spot a tougher decision. |

Decisions related to IR: Woods is done for the year, Ebukam and McGrone have a chance to return depending on their recovery.

The Colts announce their 53 man roster.
Few thoughts. 1) They kept 3 QB's. Yuck. Although not completely shocking with that last minute rule change. 2) They only kept 3 RB's. I am OK with only carrying 3 for this initial roster...a little surprised that they kept Goodson over Hull. I think it might have been easier to sign Goodson to the PS vs Hull. 3) Why did they keep Taven Bryan?? Maybe they are going to make a waiver claim or two and they just needed someone temporarily filling a spot. 4) I sure hope that Baker Jr is only on the roster for Special Teams reps and zero defensive snaps. https://www.colts.com/news/initial-5...r-quarterbacks QUARTERBACKS (3): Sam Ehlinger, Joe Flacco, Anthony Richardson RUNNING BACKS (3): Tyler Goodson, Trey Sermon, Jonathan Taylor WIDE RECEIVERS (6): Josh Downs, Ashton Dulin, Anthony Gould, Adonai Mitchell, Alec Pierce, Michael Pittman Jr. TIGHT ENDS (4): Mo Alie-Cox, Kylen Granson, Will Mallory, Drew Ogletree OFFENSIVE LINE (10): Tanor Bortolini, Blake Freeland, Will Fries, Matt Goncalves, Ryan Kelly, Quenton Nelson, Danny Pinter, Bernhard Raimann, Braden Smith, Dalton Tucker DEFENSIVE LINE (10): Adetomiwa Adebawore, DeForest Buckner, Taven Bryan, Raekwon Davis, Isaiah Land, Laiatu Latu, Tyquan Lewis, Dayo Odeyingbo, Kwity Paye, Grover Stewart LINEBACKERS (5): Jaylon Carlies, Zaire Franklin, Segun Olubi, E.J. Speed, Grant Stuard CORNERBACKS (5): Darrell Baker Jr., JuJu Brents, Dallis Flowers, Jaylon Jones, Kenny Moore II SAFETIES (4): Julian Blackmon, Nick Cross, Trevor Denbow, Rodney Thomas II |
Don't like Goodson, Pinter, Bryan, and Baker Jr. on the roster. Shocked they cut Abraham and Simpson.
|
Not a lot of surprises, but:
Didn't think Freeland would make the cut. Didn't think that we would keep 10 DL or OL. Yeah, Bryan is a surprise. Sermon must be a lock to be healed by week 1. I hope we can sign Shrader to the PS. Baker is actually decent in coverage, but can't tackle to save his life. One cut I would like to see them take flyer on is Darnay Holmes. P.S. WTF Ehlinger over Bean? |
Like everyone else really surprised on Bryan. Pinter doesn't make sense either unless Bortolini has either struggled or not been playing OC.
Surprised by Simpson, Abraham, and Hull all being cut. Hopefully we get them along w/ Witt and Bean on the PS. |

Like normal, Steichen was extremely vague on when he may be back saying something like: he's gonna miss some time, probably not an extended amount of time, but he's gonna miss time. The Colts may IR him tomorrow and open up a roster spot for a few weeks. Or they could just leave him on the 53 man roster. But they probably wanted Pinter as the backup C until Bortolini is healthy. |

If we need a CB, Rock Ya Sin was released
|
I expected Goodson and Land. Goodson is a different style RB, and Bradley was gushing about Land since early in camp.

I hope somebody else picks up Hull and he lights it up....sorry but sometimes lessons need to be learned! Hull never got a fair shot in my opinion, they wanted Goodson, you could tell by the play calling and playing time they were getting.
I was very excited for this season but after watching the preseason I have cooled off quite a bit. I don't see how this team could possibly be ready for the first game with the limited play the starters have had together, I have a feeling we are all going to be saying, "well it's only the first game" after Houston kicks our ass! |

I’m irritated at Sam over Bean.
I get why they did it. Sam knows the offense, has been here for years, and is in the last year of his contract. They thought why would we cut him? But they KNOW Sam sucks. He is completely worthless. Why not keep Bean and see if they can coach him up? |

"Bryan, for example, is a fifth DT who won't play on special teams and is only playable in obvious passing-down situations. And he seems to be deep down the pecking order even to see the field in those situations. So why not give Laulu that spot?" If you don't like Bryan, argue that. If Laulu looked better, argue that. But the whole "why not" shit just reeks of Madden-philosophy. Fatigue and injuries playing a role in roster decisions?... ...why not just turn them off in the options menu? |
Results of the Waiver Wire:
Colts gain one player, lose two... https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/1828834737336750541 The Colts add CB Samuel Womack III from San Francisco. The Colts lose DT Eric Johnson II to the Cheats and DT Jonah Laulu to Las Vegas. https://x.com/ZachHicks2/status/1828837506873217227 Quote:

Thoughts on all of this:
Glad to see that we were able to sign Hull, Simpson, Schrader, Treadwell, and especially Bean to the practice squad. Womack looks like a good pickup. Sucks on Witt and agree the Colts likely knew that he was going to hang it up. I wonder if his hip was giving him trouble again and has become a chronic issue. I still don't understand why Bryan made the team much less why he made it through our first waiver claim. Would have liked to have seen us not risk losing Bean. I get that Ehlinger probably gives us a better chance to win as an emergency QB as of today, but how long will that be for? And obviously Bean's upside is through the roof compared to Ehlinger's. |

The Bryan thing has shades of Josh Thomas. |

Shrader may be kicking in Week 1. Steichen has indicated that Matt Gay is dealing with a groin injury. https://x.com/NateAtkins_/status/1830681278569456012 Quote:

Got to love the Colts med staff + communication on injuries. So now Steichen and Matt Gay say that the kicker had a hernia and underwent surgery. The team is still not ruling him out yet for this week's game, but I would be shocked if he plays based on this new info. https://x.com/mchappell51/status/1831378395034480742 Quote:

I suppose much depends upon how big the hernia was, but in general, I would think if this were an inguinal hernia (if that was the exact diagnosis), I would expect at least 3-4 weeks to get cleared to play but then again.... An abdominal hernia would surely take longer.
That said, using the latest modern procures; that may cut the recovery time down also. Just sayin... Be curious to see just how long he ends up sitting and not exxpecting him back next week or week after. I am soooooo happy we have the backup ready to go. |
