Unofficial colts v bonkos postgame preseason thread

Bean is interesting. Typical roookie mistakes on his turnovers but he throws a tight spiral with good accuracy and velocity. And obv he runs fast

I know it's only the first game of the preseason, but if Ballard isn't on the phone calling Simmon's and Gilmore's agents,it will be a long year for that pathetic secondary !!

Racehorse 08-11-2024 06:03 PM

The run defense late in the game was horrid, but thankfully most of those guys will not be playing for the Horseshoe in three weeks.

As for QB3, I don't care which they keep, but Sam is certainly expendable.

RB2 seems to be Sermon. Goodson at RB3 would be a mistake. Hull is a better runner.

I like Gould on kick returns.

Mitchell looks solid, as expected.

Montgomery seemed to be JAG, so I see him getting more preseason snaps, or cut.

Woods sighting today. I hope he is healthy, but if not, Mallory and Granson are capable of carrying the load.

The rookie OL guys were decent. I think we have our rotational guys. Also, good to see Witt is healthy.

Defensive depth is almost non-existent. Is this an issue league-wide, or just here?

Cross and Ameer Speed were not very good today at tackling or much else. Got to get a vet added this week.

Gay and Rigo seemed rusty. I hope they bounce back.

Flowers, too. maybe he is just not very good, but it was obvious the time away hurt him some.

On a side note, I sure hope Bradley is better at calling defense once games start. Too many soft zones, and that was a real issue last year.

Racehorse 08-11-2024 06:31 PM

I forgot to mention Latu. The guy is for real. In fact, Denver was doubling him a lot. He is going to wreck a game or two this year, once Buck in on the field. Can't double both of them.

Bradley won't change. That's who he is & what he does. Why they brought him back is beyond me.

Dipshit Ballard better sign either Gilmore or Simmons but I doubt he does a damn thing.

Very disappointed to see Goodson ahead of Hull, I find that hard to believe!

Not very impressed with what I saw today, I know first game, preseason, but still, not much to be excited about! Sam must have compromising photos of Irsay or one of the daughters?

Colts Latu is for real, great personality, very humble guy....seemed genuinely excited that he was able to play at this level!

ChaosTheory 08-11-2024 08:15 PM

Only got to watch the first quarter. Hard to have takeaways with so few snaps by the starters...

-Field looks so much better. Has looked for years like the shag carpet shit that the Saints always had. Should play better, too, which is the actual important part.

-If players wear the halo helmet pads during the season, I will be sad. JT looked like he was wearing a special ed. helmet with a Colts tube sock pulled over it. Atrocious.

-Good to see AR and JT, just in general. Reminds you that we should get to see something we didn't see at all last year.

-AR only threw four passes, 2/4. Main thing is to get the accuracy to be consistent. First one to Granson, he had to adjust to the ball and couldn't get the easy first. Second one to MAC, he led his outside shoulder away from the defender and MAC turned upfield for 18.

-Only other thing worth noting fromt he 1st... Lewis and Latu were beating their guy pretty well. Don't think either got home, but they were winning.

CletusPyle 08-11-2024 08:21 PM

Good point on the field ChaosT...it looked great!

Hoopsdoc 08-11-2024 09:01 PM

Latu really does have elite hands. He has a suddenness to him that is readily apparent.

He’s not an elite natural athlete but he is a REALLY promising pass rusher.

YDFL Commish 08-11-2024 09:10 PM

The field looked much better. A little bright on my tv, I might have to adjust the settings. The important thing is what the players think.

The O-Line looked solid even when 3rd string guys played.

The D-Line not so good, other than Grove, Lewis and Latu.

QB3 should go to Bean. We know what we have with Ehlinger and Clovis shows nothing.

Bradley's defense is what it is. DB's will play off and have to tackle. We were the worst tackling team in NFL last year. That MUST stop!

If Simmons is the tackler everyone seems to think he is, then get his ass in here!

I'm really not going to get too caught up in the offensive performance, due to no gameplan. Still the execution could've been better.

CletusPyle 08-11-2024 09:55 PM

Nobody mentioned the new kickoff rules....I personally do not like it, I understand why they are doing it, but these kinds of changes lead only to more of the same down the road. I am afraid we won't recognize the game in 20 years if fear of injuries becomes the main focus! Maybe flag football is the future of the sport!:(

Mr. Session 08-12-2024 09:14 AM

The main thing I noticed out of AR last year was he throws high, a lot. I didn't love seeing that almost immediately yesterday. First game back though, so I'm hoping we get another chance to see him work some of that shit out before Houston.

I thought the defense looked like what we should expect. I gotta hope the stuff with Davis is petty and not something more sinister. Lord knows we cannot trust the organization to tell us the truth if the guy is fucked up can't play.

Latu had those lineman working. I was pleased to see they pulled his ass when Denver started trying to double him. It's a little aggravating to see Denver doing that to him at this point in the season but I guess that's also encouraging.

I gotta give it to MAC. I've been trying to shout from a soapbox for years that we need to get better there but nobody seems to want it. Granson contributes but can't take his job, and it seems like AR has a pretty good feel for him (MAC).

I agree, but I would add the following to the statement:

I don't care which QB they keep just as long as whoever it is doesn't occupy a spot on the 53 man roster. There are better uses of that roster spot.

I would hope that with the tweak to the Emergency 3rd QB rule earlier this year (that the 3rd QB can be elevated from the practice squad) that it would be a given that the Colts will only carry 2 QB's on the 53 man roster. But I think there are several people within the organization that really like Sam so I still have a little doubt if that will happen or not.

Anybody have any idea why Carlies and Brents didn't play yesterday?

I believe I read that Buckner and Brents were non-injury, rest for the final practice. I imagine they just continued resting.

Carlies has missed a bunch of practices. Hip, I think?

The team said that Brents was dealing with a "sore shoulder" and they decided to give him a day off for rest as a precautionary move.

Supposedly he would have played if it had been a regular season game.

Baldy likes what he sees from Latu:

Did anyone notice that UDFA Dalton Tucker was the #2 RG and got the majority of snaps? I also thought that he played pretty well.
