PFF Grades on Free Agents
If you hate PFF grades, then feel free to move on.
If you are interested in the PFF assigned grades of impending NFL Free Agents at positions of need (and Colts free agents at those positions), then read on. A grade of 60.0 is considered "NFL average." I only listed players 30 years old or younger as of 01 Sep 2017. I cannot imagine that Ballard will be interested in signing older players with his talk of "getting younger." Name / Grade / Age as of 01 Sep 2017 / Team / # Snaps / FA Status 0-Tech NT: Brandon J. Hugh Thornton does not have a grade since he did not play any in 2016. Cheers, |
In before Omaha starts bitching about pff.
1. Calais Campbell 2. Melvin Ingram 3. AJ Bouye This team's off-season priority should focus around having a strong draft, and maybe bringing in a couple solid free agents. One of the those solid free agent signings should preferably be a OLB or MLB. |
Cardinals have a lot of defensive FAs, they can't possibly resign them all...
|
Wow the colts LBers suck
I mean we knew it, but this just shows how bad they are. Surely they can find some free agent upgrades. Can't get much worse. |
In the world of possible free agents:

I mean, I'd take him. Yes, he comes with baggage. Yes, he'll want a pretty penny. Yes, he's getting long in the tooth. Yes, CB1 is arguably the one position that we arguably have set on this whole damn defense. Yes, I'm aware of all that. However, this team is in dire need of defensive playmakers. Period. And honestly, adding Talib to our secondary would probably do wonders in terms of being able to cover WR's in our secondary. Yes, I'd rather have a marquee pass rusher. Yes, I'd rather go with an ILB that can defend the run AND cover. Yes, I'd rather have an NT that's not David Parry that does his best isn't up to snuff. But I'll take defensive playmakers WHEREVER we can get them on this D right now. This defensive roster is so woefully undertalented across the board that becoming proficient at literally any aspect of defense would be a boon for us right now. |

It appears to me that the "deepest" areas of free agency are in both secondary positions (CB and Safety), ILB and 5-Tech DE. I think there is a better change of some true NFL starters making it to the open market at those positions. There are only two 0-Tech NT that might be available but they are pretty easy to re-sign if their home team desires and I think the OLB class will be very thin and will be hotly chased after. If we could come out of free agency with a new starter at ILB, D-Line (0 or 5 Tech) and a secondary slot (sliding either Robinson to CB3 or else Green to Safety3), then we could use the draft to concentrate on OLB (3 picks in top five picks) and then at least use 1 of the other 2 top picks on Def Front-7 or possible RB. Getting a Comp 4th round pick for Fleener (not confirmed but the calculations say that is what should happen) will be pretty brilliant for Ballard in his first draft class as GM. Cheers, |
Poe, Short, Berry, Simon, Collins, Brown should all be players the Colts target. Good year for defensive FA.

I want Talib's talent but not his mental condition.

I'm already on record that if the Colts drafted Cam Robinson in Round 1, that I wouldn't lose my mind. I'd prefer to go defense certainly, but he'd instantly be an upgrade at RT, and we'd at that point have invested Dallas Cowboys-level amount in our OL, so I'd at least expect a fairly formidable wall. If they went Dalvin Cook, I'll add with the qualifier, as long as they sign several guys in free agency, then fine. I don't think they will, Ballard seems like his focus will be upgrading the defense, but he is getting Mocked to us in seemingly every Mock Draft, so who knows. That said, I do absolutely believe that Dalvin Cook will be something truly special in the NFL and he'd REALLY open things up in our offense to do some truly incredible things. I do prefer defense, though. What I WANT though is substantial investment in ILB/OLB. It looks like the guys will be there in the Draft and free agency. BUT like I said, if the Colts decide they think they can exploit a market inefficiency and become wonderful at any one position (besides WR/TE), then fine. |
I would target Nick Perry to play SAM. I know he really didn't do much until his contract year, but he's still an upgrade over Walden.
I would also take a flyer on Jarvis Jones, under a moderate 2 yr. deal. Yeah he was a bust in Pitt., but if he could breakout like Jerry Hughes did, then we may have something. I would also target A.J. Bouye and Tony Jefferson. |

Dom Capers is a hack. He's ruined BJ Raji's career and squashed the effectiveness out of Clay Matthews. I am wary of Nick Perry but Capers could easily be the problem there.

I'd happily take Ronald Leary and let our remaining guys battle it out for the other right side of the OL spot. |

Apparently we are checking out both Ingram and Perry. Couple other guys too

I'm fully sold on Ricky Wagner now. Sign him up and hand him the starting RT job. Done like dinner. Jahleel Addae, I'm fully sold would be an improvement over the status quo. Sorry, but he would be. Low hurdle to clear, but he clears it. Is he worth the money? Meh, but if we're signing big money pass rushers like Parry and/or Ingram, then we might need to overpay some to make sure our investment doesn't go entirely for naught. |

OT: Ricky Wagner / 84.5 / 27 / Ravens / 926 / UFA Ty Nsekhe / 75.4 / 31 / Redskins / 386 / RFA (31 year old RFA ?!?) Christopher Hubbard / 72.8 / 26 / Steelers / 326 / RFA Cameron Fleming / 71.9 / 24 / Patriots / 284 / RFA Menelik Watson / 70.0 / 28 / Raiders / 255 / UFA Wagner = 47 games started Watson = 17 games started Fleming = 14 games started Nsekhe = 6 games started Hubbard = 4 games started Really only one clear cut option in Wagner with, perhaps, some interest in Watson but, honestly, I would rather roll with Clark or Haeg. Although Watson is a former 2nd round draft pick (#42 overall in 2013) he missed all of 2015 due to injury and Haeg has nearly as many games starting in one season in the NFL as Watson has during 3 seasons. OG: Kevin Zeitler / 87.1 / 27 / Bengals / 1087 / UFA T.J. Lang / 85.7 / 29 / Packers / 791 / UFA Andrew Norwell / 85.7 / 25 / Panthers / 1108 / RFA Larry Warford / 82.0 / 26 / Lions / 974 / UFA Ronald Leary / 81.8 / 28 / Cowboys / 803 / UFA John Jerry / 78.2 / 31 / Giants / 1060 / UFA Austin Pasztor / 77.3 / 26 / Browns / 1020 / UFA Patrick Omameh / 77.1 / 27 / Jaguars / 454 / UFA Jahri Evans / 76.8 / 34 / Saints / 1137 / UFA Stefen Wisniewski / 75.2 / 28 / Eagles / 606 / UFA Evan Mathis 74.9 G 35 Cardinals 199 UFA Ryan Jensen / 73.1 / 26 / Ravens / 273 / RFA Ted Larsen / 72.3 / 30 / Bears / 581 / UFA Oday Aboushi / 71.9 / 26 / Texans / 267 / UFA Tim Lelito / 70.5 / 28 / Saints / 405 / UFA For as thin as the OT free agency class is, the OG class is pretty stacked. 8 full times starters (around 800+ snaps in a season) plus a lot of guys who were, perhaps, not full time starters but played a good number of snaps and performed well. If we bring in an O-Line body, it needs to be at the top of our talent depth chart and not just another body because we have a good pick of good guys....not great guys. If we go O-Line in free agency, I would bet it would be for right OG and then letting Reitz, Clark, Good and Haeg battle it out for starting RT duties with the other three being the primary backups along with Blythe. Cheers, |
i agree with shrek. if we go oline in free agency then i say we go guard. clark, haeg and good can all play rt. one of them has to be good enough right?
also i could see us letting mewhort walk so a proven right guard would be ideal |
I'd love to grab 2 aggressive hammers like Ingram and Swearinger
|
Larry Warford is the guy I would most like the Colts to grab in terms of improving the offensive line. He is young at 26 but has 4 years of starting experience having started every game he has played in missing 7 games in 4 years. He is a good run blocker and lining him up next to Ryan Kelly and Mewhort could make for some big holes up the middle.
Obviously we need to bring in at least two LB's via free agency and another two via the draft, and this has to be the priority, but I can see that Warford is a potential big time player who could make a big difference for the Colts. I am less convinced with the LBers available in free agency this year and think we are only going to get marginal upgrades rather than star performers in free agency. |
We do have 50 plus million that we can spend.....so an OLman for $10m a year, Eric Berry for $13m a year surpassing the contract signed by the honey badger, and two mid level LBers paired with our two top draft picks both at LBer, possibly another big name signing like Trumain Johnson from the Rams at CB and maybe we bring in someone like Darren McFadden at RB to help out is something that financially speaking we ought to be able to do.
A defensive lineup of Henry Anderson (hopefully back to his rookie best) David Parry / Hassan Ridgeway Kendall Langford Rookie 1st rounder Free agent pickup / Edwin Jackson Rookie 2nd rounder / Antonio Morrison Free agent pickup Vontae Davis Eric Berry Clacton Geathers / Donald Butler Trumaine Johnson / Patrick Robinson Suddenly we go from having very few recognisable names to having backups who are very serviceable. We would still be light in the LB department, but could use mid to late round picks to help out there. |
