The Development of Jonathan Taylor (Film room Video)

Ever since Marlon Mack went down with an Achilles injury in week 1, running back Jonathan Taylor has taken over the RB #1 duties for the Indianapolis Colts.
As of Week 6 in the NFL 2020 season, Indy is only 28th in Yards per game, and dead last as a team in rushing yards per attempt. (Taylor is 28th for NFL RB's at 4.1 YPC)
Is Taylor developing properly?
Is he not the player we thought he was entering the draft?
Is this an offensive line issue?
I dive into the ALL-22 film room to find out what is going on.

Almost all of Taylor's runs have been between the tackles, yet he has speed. I'd like to see a few runs outside. I believe he's faster than Mack was, isn't he?

apballin 11-15-2020 02:03 PM

Feels like he’s pressing, he needs a big game for confidence but I think he’ll be ok.

That play where he trucked that titans was fuckin awesome just give me 1 of those every game and that’s fine with me

JAFF 11-15-2020 02:57 PM

I’m not impressed with the blocking on some of his runs on Thursday. Three of his runs there was contact behind the LOS. I think the was one run outside the box, everything inside. If I can figure it out, a dumb DC can figure it out as well

I'm not going to even mention anything about JT's rushing yards today against the Raiders

His blitz pickups were the best I've seen in a long time!

That one where the DB fucking perfectly jumped the snap and had a CLEANNN look at Rivers was something else.

I was pissed the commentator's didn't give JT props for that. That was one of the best blocks I've seen a back on this team make, ever.

Wish I could have been in the stadium to hear those pads pop too.

Yeah same thoughts here, didn't even see a replay of it from what i can remember.

Chromeburn 12-14-2020 01:09 PM

I’ve been a little worried about JT’s development. Usually RB’s acclimate to the NFL fast and you know if they are good or not. But I tried to keep in mind this is an unusual year and covid has wrecked everything in some way. Last night helped alleviate that, although that Raiders defense was imploding.

I was too. However the last several games he seems to be seeing the holes better and being decisive. I think he will keep trending up so ling as the line keeps up its blocking.

The TD run was the Wisconsin Rb we saw on tape. They got him out in space and he found the gap and accelerated. Thats the guy they have been looking for

ESPN ticker said he reached 21.4mph on that run

YDFL Commish 12-15-2020 07:43 PM

I believe that AWS clocked Taylor at 21.9 last week and Hines at 21.4.

It showed the home run threat we wanted. But those holes are very rare in the NFL. It’s mostly the 5-10 yard grind. He does seem to be opening his vision up more. If we can eliminate a lot of the negative plays, which admittedly are not his fault if he is getting hit behind the line, then I think he will turn out ok.

TheMugwump 12-16-2020 06:57 PM

Not sure about his big gainer, but they did have Rivers under center a few more times against the Raiders, and from all I've read, that is more what Taylor was used to at Wisconsin.

I wonder if that had any effect.

I the history of the Colts' franchise (1953 - Present), the only running backs to have had 1,000-Plus yards rushing in their first 2 seasons in the NFL have been Marshall Faulk, Edgerrin James, and Joseph Addai.

Eric Dickerson 1,000-plus yards rushing in his first 3 seasons with the Colts in 1987, 1988, and 1989, but he was not a rookie as were Faulk, James, and Addai. Lydell Mitchell also had 3 consecutive 1,000-plus yard seasons in 1975, 1976, and 1977, but it was not his first 3 seasons in the NFL.

Jonathan Taylor is only 63 yards away from joining that select list, and he will have a chance to do so on Sunday against the Bills in northwestern New York State.

Taylor may have had one of his most impressive games of the season, considering the fact that he had almost no offensive line to work with.

It was mildly reminiscent of O.J. Simpson's excellent 1972 season, when he was running behind a below-average offensive line ....... in the off-season, GM Bob Lustig shored up that offensive line significantly, and they immediately vaulted into being one of the top blocking fronts in the NFL. "The Electric Company" helped pave the way for Simpson's historic 1973 season. To this day, he is the only player ever to rush for more than 2,000 yards in only 14 games. Eric Dickerson passed the milestone in the 15th game of the 1984 season, and every other running back that has done it since did so in the 16th game of the season.

NFL Rank 2022: Predicting the Top 100 Players, with Stats, Notes and Quotes for the League's Best

(By Stephania Bell)

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/...k-mahomes-no-1

***************************

18)l Jonathan Taylor

RB | Colts

Age: 23

2021 Rank: Unranked

Taylor led the NFL in carries in 2021, but the Colts are looking to reduce his workload this season. Still, his speed and home-run ability is what separates him from most backs. He'll remain a threat to score every time he touches the ball, even with fewer attempts. --- Stephen Holder

Signature Stat: ) In 2021, Taylor became the youngest player in NFL history to have a season with at least 2,000 scrimmage yards and 20 scrimmage touchdowns. Taylor accrued 2,171 yards from scrimmage and 20 touchdowns during his age-22 season.

What They're Saying: ) "J.T. has just taken it to the next level. He's learning from everybody. He's seeing others do certain things, seeing receivers do certain things, and he's learning. That's one thing about J.T: He's gonna ask questions and he's gonna learn. And I think that's why he's gonna have another big year and will take an even bigger jump." --- Colts RB Nyheim Hines

2022 Projection: ) 1,493 rushing yards, 13 TDs (351 yards, 2 TDs receiving)
