The author of the article chimes on on the Rams' handling of their salary cap over the last few years. He points out that the contracts for Brandin Cooks, Todd Gurley, and Jared Goff were not so great in the first place, but now they look even worse due to the fact that none of those 3 players are still with the Rams.

Maybe it will force them to release Donald and the Colts can sign him to team with Buckner and form the best interior pass rush in NFL history.

Naw.

For 2021, Donald's cap hit is $27.8m but his dead cap is $35.9m. It would cost the Rams $8.1m MORE in cap space to cut him in 2021 than retain him. A trade would help them clear a bit of cap space (only about $3m) but the cost to the new team would be steep in draft choices.

The Saints, Eagles, Rams, Falcons, Packers and Steelers are all in cap trouble for 2021.

While the Falcons and Steelers can "solve" their cap troubles by cutting one or two high paid folks, the others don't have enough guys to cut to make it under the cap. They will have to restructure which is only kicking the can down the road and putting them into cap hell later.

They gambled greatly that the cap would always keep rising and the COVID contraction is going to kill them.

It’s put over half the league in trouble. It will be a FA Buffett soon.

Because getting rid of the best D lineman in the NFL makes so much sense

Most of what you post doesn't make sense. Doesn't stop you.

Of course they would want to keep Donald. I don't think it will happen that they're forced to release him to clear cap space, and I hadn't even looked into the cap implications of them releasing him. I'd just really like to see Aaron Donald as a Colt, but I've wanted that since February 2014.

Not that this will ever happen, but what if the Lions said they wanted to trade Goff? Would the Colts be interested and if so, at what price?
