On the final play from scrimmage, Jonathan Taylor lost 2 yards.
If Steichen was going to take the ultra-conservative at that point, then he should have run a QB sneak on 3rd down ...... a QB sneak will at least gain a yard or 2, AND it will prevent you from losing yardage ...... so instead of a 60-yard FG attempt for Schrader, it would have been a 55-yard or a 56-yard attempt.
And yes, I do think that it helps a kicker a lot if he is trying to make a 55 or 56-yarder instead of trying to make a 60-yarder ...... just like I think that it helps a kicker if he is trying to make a 52 or 53-yarder instead of a 57-yarder.
Steichen did neither risk-take nor conservative with that final play-call from scrimmage ...... he did the worst thing possible, which is to hand off to the running back who was lined up a good 5 or 6 yards behind the line of scrimmage, which gave the defense a chance to penetrate and throw the ball-carrier for a loss.
That is what I was thinking as it was happening. It was clear from the previous 2 calls from scrimmage that Steichen was going ultra-conservative, but in my rat's ass of an opinion, he even screwed that up ...... thankfully it became a moot point because of the 15-yard personal foul penalty, but I really think that there would have been a decent chance that Schrader would have been a little more confident and might have made a 56 or 57-yard attempt if it had come down to that.
